+madcats Posted November 19, 2007 Posted November 19, 2007 I've been encouraging friends to take up Geocaching, with reasonable success . Sometimes they ask me how Geocaching started and I find this a bit hard to answer. I believe that Geocaching has been around since about 2000, but I don't know what triggered it. I've been asked if it evolved from letterboxing, or orienteering, or if the GPS device manufacturers start it? Does anybody know for sure? Quote

+egami Posted November 19, 2007 Posted November 19, 2007 There are links off the main GC.com site...here is one: http://www.geocaching.com/about/history.aspx Quote
+trainlove Posted November 19, 2007 Posted November 19, 2007 (edited) http://www.geocaching.com/about/ has a whole lot of good links to check out. Particularily the history link for your question and the FAQ's are great to read also. ARRG, how did the original posting get changed in to 2 apparently different posts but exactly the same? I think that 3 people trying to reply to the posting at exacxtly the same time is related to that. And why does this post still show 0 replies? (Moderator moved your post back into the topic!) I should have thought of going back to the getting started page! I'll just print that info off and carry it around with me. Quote

+Thrak Posted November 19, 2007 Posted November 19, 2007 Jeramy is the person to ask for all the details, he's the founder of the game. ~.~Scare Force One Jeremy is NOT the "inventor" of geocaching. The first "stash" was placed by someone else. There are several versions of the history of geocaching. Here is the most current version that is sanctioned by this web site: History of Geocaching Quote
