How did Geocaching get started?

I've been encouraging friends to take up Geocaching, with reasonable success :blink: . Sometimes they ask me how Geocaching started and I find this a bit hard to answer. I believe that Geocaching has been around since about 2000, but I don't know what triggered it. I've been asked if it evolved from letterboxing, or orienteering, or if the GPS device manufacturers start it?

 

Does anybody know for sure?

ARRG, how did the original posting get changed in to 2 apparently different posts but exactly the same?

I think that 3 people trying to reply to the posting at exacxtly the same time is related to that. And why does this post still show 0 replies?

Jeremy is NOT the "inventor" of geocaching. The first "stash" was placed by someone else. There are several versions of the history of geocaching. Here is the most current version that is sanctioned by this web site:
