Color or not for handheld mapping GPS?

I'm looking to upgrade from my old Magellan 310. Is it worth the extra money to buy a color GPS or should I save some money and buy a non color unit?

Color is well worth it for two reasons.

First the screens are not much more readable even when compared to a B/W unit. I was truly suprised when I first saw a 60C and how much better it was.

 

Second, to get decent features these days, it's all color. The screen itself is now a trivial item (other than size) and they tend to strip out all the other features on the B/W units that you would enjoy.

It is definitely worth it to get a color GPSr. The processors are faster and they usually connect to your computer with USB instead of with the Serial port.

 

I used a dependable, auto-routing Garmin Vista C for more than two years before upgrading to the Vista HCx.

Is it worth it to buy the units with the memory cards?

A memory card is a must now. You can add more detail maps on it. I had the magellan sportrak map and went to the explorist 500 and wow what a difference.

If you travel a lot, those units can be great. The reason I upgraded to the Vista HCx was more because it holds 1000 waypoints instead of the 500 the Vista C held. I don't travel much, so I really didn't need more than the 24 MB of memory for maps the Vista C had.
