AtwellFamily Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 (edited) I have been working on this coin for a while now. Based on Celestial Navigation, Sextant and Positioning Circle. Using these 3 things sailors would calculate thier position on the earth, you could say this was an early form of the GPSr. I was looking for some feedback and interest level. Do you like the design? Feedback welcome. Would you buy it? Should I make both versions (round and cutout)? The mold cost on both of these is quite high becuase of the 3D Sextant on each. To give you more detail. Looking to produce these in 1.75" for the round one and 1.5" for the cutout. The plating will be a variety but will be doing a number of mixed/duel plating choice. +intolerable Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 Trying to decide what coins to buy on payday and really wish both designs were available to order, as they'd be on my list. I do prefer the round design, but I usually prefer my coins to be coin like :-) That's not at all to say I wouldn't order both though. Quote
mrjiffy Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 A nice looking coin that I would likely buy at least a couple of. I like the traditionally shaped coin, not as keen on the cutout although it still looks nice. If cost of the coin to me was kept to $10 or under, I would buy. Thanks, MRJIFFY Quote
WWC-World's Worst Cacher Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 shapped i would spend money on, round nope. In fact like the shaped a lot. Quote
Landsharkz Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 The Columbia Guide to Standard American English confirms that: "A boat can be a good sailer because it sails well; but a good sailor is always “a person who is expert at sailing or helping to sail a boat” " . We are sailors and our boat is a very good sailer! That being said... I like the shaped one . Quote
AtlantaGal Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 The shaped one makes for a much more interesting piece. Quote

3doxies Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 I really like the round one best but both are beautiful. You really outdid yourself on this one! I would definitely buy. Quote
High n Low Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 I like them both but the back of the shaped, I'm not too excited about although I don't know how you would improve it. I would buy either version though. Quote
avroair Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Looks cool. Although I believe a very similar design was used on the back of the GCC benchmark and another coin that I can't remember off the top of my head. Quote
Accordiongal Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Like the overall idea. To me, the sextant is too busy, espically with the "arms" that stick out. The inner detail with the geocaching @ is great. Like both backs. I probably would pass. Good luck with your project. Quote
Traderdell Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 I almost always prefer round coins but in this case I would go with the shaped one. Would purchase either or both though. Quote
Jake - Team A.I. Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Looks cool. Although I believe a very similar design was used on the back of the GCC benchmark and another coin that I can't remember off the top of my head. You mean mine? Quote
PaRacers Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 I like the round one for sure...A LOT!! I'd like to see the constellations on the back too. Very nice - I'd buy a couple. Quote
OshnDoc Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 (edited) Looks cool. Although I believe a very similar design was used on the back of the GCC benchmark and another coin that I can't remember off the top of my head. Team A.I. maybe? edit: I guess it would help to read to the end of the thread. Just saw Jakes post. Edited November 14, 2007 by OshnDoc Quote
stellarscapes Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 I'd prefer the round coin. However, I like the design on the front of the round coin, but I like the design on the back of the shaped coin better (with the constellations on it). Either way, I'd buy one. Quote
Jackalgirl Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 (edited) I was looking for some feedback and interest level. [*]Do you like the design? Feedback welcome. Yes! Edited to add: I like both versions as they are. I like the geometry (sp?) on the round coin, and the constellations on the shaped one. [*]Would you buy it? YES [*]Should I make both versions (round and cutout)? If you had to stick with just one, I'd go with the cutout. If you think the demand supports both, do both. I'd buy at least one of each. -- JG (a sailor) Edited November 14, 2007 by Jackalgirl Quote
Mystery Ink Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Like the shaped one, would probably buy a couple and use one for my boat keychain.. Quote
danoshimano Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 I'm trying to stick to personal coin issues, but I would definitely consider this coin as a special exception. My first choice would be round. Quote
Nochipra Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 I like both coins but I think I would like the shaped the best at this point. I like the constellations but I think they would be cool as glow in the dark. If you make a round coin I'd say go with the front of the round one and put the constellations in glow in dark on the back. Just my 2 cents worth:) Quote
Frozen Buns Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Shape for me, Esp. if cost is kept to $10 inc. shipping Quote
Voyageurs60 Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Like them both - slight edge to the cutout version How can I be alerted that these coins are available? Thank you, voyageurs60 (Dan) Quote
ShmilyNMe Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 I like them both! Very nice designs... Quote
GPX Navigators Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Geez Mike - tough choice. Both are great. Would probably buy both too. Quote
PJPeters Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Wow. That's all I've got to say! Okay, that, and I'd buy a couple of each. Wow, again! Quote
wutzebear Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Unless they aren't available in the wrong moment (means i haven't bought to many coins in the last few days), i'd go for the shaped, perhaps the round ones too. Quote

fairyhoney Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 I, personally, am drawn to the shaped. But both coins are "cool" Quote

Astro_D Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 I really like the round design and would certainly be interested in buying a couple. Being astronomy enthusiasts ans sitting through a few celestial navigation classes the sextant is a great instrument. Quote

Shop99er Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Can I just go ahead and ask for one of each now, and avoid the rush? Quote
Sunrayers Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 I like them both and would be in for a couple of either (or both) I just confused myself! Quote
Wij Drie Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 I like them both and would probably buy both, if the costs are right and the shipping isn't to high. tot cache, team Wij Drie Quote
wsgaskins Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 I like 'em both. For this one, since it's not going to be a real, functional instrument, I'd say stick with the round one. For the back of the round one, maybe throw the stars on the back onto the 'celestial sphere' (proper locations, of course!) and add landmasses to the globe so that the calculated position is say, Denver Colorado. Quote
Dolfy Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 I like the look of the shaped one better. Really makes it unique. Quote
AtwellFamily Posted November 14, 2007 Author Posted November 14, 2007 Like them both - slight edge to the cutout version How can I be alerted that these coins are available? Thank you, voyageurs60 (Dan) Go to my site in my sig and complete the contact form. I'll add you to my list of contacts. Quote
AtwellFamily Posted November 14, 2007 Author Posted November 14, 2007 You guys are making this difficult. A 1/3 want round, 1/3 want cutout and 1/3 want both. And I'm sure everyone wants it for $10 or less. Oh and the stars should be in glow enamel. Did I miss anything? Stars will be changed to glow and the lines will be removed. I'll need to wait a bit until I can pay for the molds but will do both Cost......They will be in the $11.50 range but that includes shipping in North America That should be good for everyone. Thanks for the feedback. I'll make the changes and see how they look. Quote
GEO*Trailblazer 1 Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Just a quick question. The coins look great,is there a way to make it a working sextant? Wouldn't that be cool. I know it would probably be more work though. But like a spinning coin 2 pins should make it a workable piece. Quote
backhiker Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Isn't fun how everyone has their own likes and dislikes! That's what makes the world (or is it stars) go round, and why you can't please everyone. Unless you make two coins My vote would be for the round, I know it's traditional but I like the background around the sextant. JMHO Quote
geo_taz Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 I would definitely by the shaped one, but probably also the round one Quote
Theseus Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Neat looking coin. I would go for the round one but not the shaped one - I think that puts me in the minority. Quote
TazDevil091102 Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Both are great looking and knowing me I'd buy both and be broke again. Quote
Shop99er Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Just a quick question. The coins look great,is there a way to make it a working sextant? That would require some very small eyes.... Quote
Degai Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 Wow! Yet, another awesome coin. I'd go for the round one. Quote
