+new_dharma
so I just started caching this year and I have a good idea what to bring for the hot days...cool days...days with rain (or possible rain)...but I live in Minnesota...what about COLD days? What about snow? what to wear isn't the issue (i've been winter camping, downhill & cross-country skiing, winter hiking) it's more the GEAR. are we snow-bound (for a good part of the year) states partially exempt from the "Caches that are buried...If a shovel, trowel or other “pointy” object is used to dig, whether in order to hide or to find the cache, then it is not appropriate" because of snow? thanks all have fun! uperdooper
well...you can pretty much leave the deet behind. many a cache has been found by poking a walking stick down in the snow. caches make a different thunking sound when a walking stick hits them. Quote Link to comment

kurtisweltikol
Don't do what my caching partner trevor.manternach did in this photo. Geocache pic When looking at the pic straight on. I am second from the left and he is on the far right. Quote Link to comment
+StarBrand
I've seen a few cachers bring along metal detectors for winter caching........be careful though - some areas ban them. Quote Link to comment
+Renegade Knight
I have a shovel just for digging in the snow for the cache. Digging doesn't count when it's snow. Ground yes. Snow, no. Snow Shoes. 500' off the trail is one heck of a hike in 3' of snow. I have a hiking stick for poking like has been mentioned. All the rest of the gear is what you already know about insofar as my pack. Quote Link to comment
+Zop
Wow.. Sounds like some pretty harsh climate ya got there! In our neck of the woods, Sonoma County CA, winter gear includes a spare pair of socks, shoes and a wind breaker. Maybe a coat when it's really raining. - No really, I've learned to bring along a towel, a flashlight and a little grabbing tool for pretty much all seasons. I've been soaked thru on some of my cache outings but we're very fortunate out here that it rarely gets to freezing and snow is a rarity. In fact, I hear more complaints about the weather when it's a mild 95 degrees. This is a great question though for other areas! I'll be following this thread for a while because we're planning to be in Utah soon and I hear it's gonna be cold! Z... Quote Link to comment

+H2OBob
You might want to take a sheet of plastic to sit on, or to empty the cache on without getting it wet. Also, take a pencil. it will write after the pen freezes. Quote Link to comment
kurtisweltikol
Hard to make it out.. Is he wearing loafers?? Moccasins Actually. It was our second caching trip. We didn't know what to expect. Sure enough we all fell in the snow at least once(well i managed to fall down 3 times on the same icy hill in the backround.) that day. Quote Link to comment
