Using GPS for navigation and Golf

I mainly want a unit to help me with hiking, photo hunting and some geocaching. However, I read that you can input way points on a golf course and it will give you the distances. Is this an accurate statement. I am not going to buy an iGolf because I am comfortable enough with the sprinkler heads.

Any suggestions on which unit is best for the hiking is primary. If it can also be used on golf course, that would be a bonus.

Thanks,

P

You'll need to mark the location of the pins ahead of time, in order to use it for golf. There may be a website that contains this info for major courses.

SkyCaddie offers modified Magellan Explorist units for golfers (SG3 & SG4). They also sell SkyPlayer memberships where you can download golf course tracks and waypoints.

Thanks, but I plan on using it on just the one course in the area where I joined this month after retiring. I just wanted to see if a regular GPS unit like example: Garmin eTrex would work on the course and let me save the settings.

Yes the Garmin Etrex will work

Go to the golf course and make a waypoint in the center of each green

(Pin placement changes so you mark the center of the green)

The next time you tee off, on your garmin goto waypoint 1 and then

number 2 and so on

I did exactly that on my home course. I made waypoint on the center of each green. I really did not find it to be very useful. The yardages marked on the course are more than adequate. As for hiking, I use my GPSr in conjunction with USA Photomaps which is free download. Pretty cool program.
