GEOCOINFEST 08: PITTSBURGH

If Round 1 shows a clear winner/leader will you still continue on to the Final Round?

Can you define this " ... clear winner/leader ... " ?

I would go with all the steps avroair has suggested to keep later possible 'complaints' to a minimum -- after all this is supposed to be fun

Sure, my pea-brain  was thinking... what if the same location gets 6's in the ranking from all 4 voters on the first round.

how about a slightly international venue like Halifax Nova Scotia Canada? Many geocoin fanatics here.

I Second the nomination for Halifax, Nova Scotia.

It has ample hotel accomodations in the downtown core, Several Locations where you can hold large events well over 500 people.

Halifax Nova Scotia is a Historic town and has enough historical & general interest venues to keep any geocacher busy for days on end (I've lived in Halifax for 7 years and there are still many things we've yet to experience). We have the Historic Properties on the waterfront which will bring you all along the Halifax Waterfront, where you will find a Casino(start of a multi), a Maritime Museum, a working Brewery (with tour and free beer), all the way to 'pier 21(several caches within walking distance)' where Canada's European immigrants mostly came through. further in you have the Halifax Citadel which is an active reenactment site (also the site of 3 caches).

The Halifax penisula itself has approximately 80 some caches on it all of which are walkable to,( I know, we did them all with a stroller). HRM which encompasses Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford, and Sackville, to name a few, has something in the region of a few hundred caches within easy drive of any hotel accomodations.

Most Important, It is only a short drive from the First Canadian Geocache GCBBA. Getting to that cache brings you down Highway 333 which is a Cache Heavy highway, where a series, known as Easy Street, starts mere minutes from the city and continues for something in the order of 45 caches on the road, which takes about 2 hours to complete.

I'm a new Cachers so i can't even begin to tell you about all of the Cache wonders that HRM and Nova Scotia holds, but each time i turn around I find something new here to make me glad I'm a GeoCacher.

Neways, My two bits.

For those who have never been to the Burgh, it will be hard to understand that we have our own language and style of living here. Whether it be something as simple as hearing people talking about Yinz or learning a Pittsburgh left while driving (nielsenc still has issues with this). Regardless there is a way to see how much you have to learn about our city if you are making a trip here, and hopefully everyone will be encouraged to do so sometime next year. Maybe in October as I hear it's a great time of year to visit (fingers crossed).

How Pittsburgh are you?

Naturally this was rather simple and took me all of 30 seconds to be told I am 100% Pittsburgh. Not to derail Mark's thread, but how Pittsburgh are you? I must go now to watch my Stillers beat up on the brownies from the mistake on the lake. So how Burgh are you?

Here was my score: 7%

"Jeez-o-man! That's an awful score. You know nothing about Picksburgh. You're probably also a Dallas Cowboys fan. You're just not cut out for this quiz. I guess it's just a Burgh thing!"

And as a matter of fact....I am a Dallas Cowboys fan! To the core!

Mark,

I was thinking about this ~ Is there a 'score' for "Cache Saturation" in and around the area of the proposed sites?

Caches (or better yet, quality caches) could easily be found by PQ with the hosting city giving a zip code to the voting panel. If that is something you might want to consider during the deliberation, PM the individuals for a zip code to share within the voting members.

If you can determine quality caches from nothing more than a PQ you need to head over to the general topics area and explain how you do this since it is a topic that has been discussed since caching began.

Not only that, the bids were turned in and they began their deliberations days ago. Wouldn't it be rather unfair to everyone to add another element to the judging after the bids were submitted?

We did add cache saturation to our bid.

I actually went to each of the areas and took a peek at what caches were in each of the areas, but with the event being 11 months away it's not that great a consideration since there is plenty of time to place some caches. The caching landscape changes alot in 11 months. Thanks for the idea though. -_-

How Pittsburgh are you?

So how Burgh are you?

64% - I know, I know...You're originally from Pittsburgh, but when you went to college you had to fit in, right? So you had to forget your Pittsburgh roots, right? WELL THAT'S NO EXCUSE!

Actually, I'm not from Pittsburgh, just from Pennsylvania, lol. I've only been to Pittsburgh once and that was to see the Dead at Star Lake Amp. (which I think has a different name nowadays).

Great job! There's nooooo doubt about it. You're from Da Burgh. You deserve a reward, so go have an Ahrn City or two. And GO STILLERS!

Well, I'm not from da Burgh, but 90 miles south and a native West Virginian. I've only heard "gumbands" used by one other person in over 40 years and he was a Burgh native.

Fun link pghlooking, thanks for the diversion.

Good luck to Pittsburgh with their bid! If it's the winner I'm sure everyone will find good caching, good food, ample accomodations, and great hosts!

You are 29% Pittsburgh.

You must be born and raised in Illunoiz. Or Ahia. or Warshington. Or Itly. Or any place but Da Burgh. (and when I say "Da Burgh" I, of course, mean Picksburgh.)

Cute and fun! :anicute:

Hmm, my mom was born and raised in Wisconsin in the 20s/30s, then moved to WA state and stayed there ever since....TO THIS DAY she still says Warshington and she warshes her clothes in the warshing machine! -_-

I had no idea Da Burgh had spread so far west!

Now see Will, if you had allowed this book to guide you, you could've saved yourself a few key strokes and simply typed "yunz" or "yinz". N@ :D

If he was a Texan, he would have said "ya'll"

But we forgive him! His wife has a Texas accent!

Twirl it vigorously around in the air over your head chanting "Here we go Steelers, Here we go. Here we go Steelers, Here we go. Picksburgh's going to the Superbowl!" and slowing you will be cured of this ailment called Dallas. On the other hand, at least you aren't a Browns fan. :D

Or you could try to trade it in there. I hear the going rate is 9 Dallas shirts for each Terrible Towel.

At least with retirements they can now huddle up without it being a parole violation.

This will be interesting to see how it plays out now that we are down to 3.

I was surprised that all 3 places finished so close in the totals. I expected one or two of them to be clear front-runners...but it didn't work out that way.

Good luck to all the potential hosts! One of you will have a lot of people coming to town!

And whichever city gets the event, one of the most important elements of the fest will be the people that attend - this community. It's going to be blast just meeting new and renewing old acquaintances. :D
