GEOCOINFEST 08: PITTSBURGH

My West coast bid was just me being sarcastic. Avroair knows I swore I would never host another one! :)

I'm still waiting to see if a serious bid from Hotlanta comes in...if not, I already know where my vote will be cast.

I would love to do Hotlanta as well, but I guess I am too far away to put a bid in a serious bid for that site?

For an event this size you need to have someone local to do a lot of groundwork for you. Many hands make light work!

LOL @ Ladebear!

I just received a big box full of stuff with the Pittsburgh groups bid today. They really outdid themselves with not only an informative video and bid proposal, but also all the extras that symbolize Pennsylvania. I'm really impressed!

Hey, while we're talking Pittsburgh bribery, N@...

Depending on the actual date of the GeoCoinFest event, and the timing of the NFL Schedule, I'd prolly entertain the idea of having a contest to take one lucky geocoiner to a Pittsburgh Steelers game. I might even toss in a Primanti's Sammich and ear plugs to combat my incessant heckling of opposing QB's.

See how Steve McNair handles me tonight... :D

As part of the Battle Mountain Bid, I sent all of them this:

Battle Mountain is perhaps best known as having been designated with the dubious distinction of "armpit of America" in a 2001 Washington Post Magazine article. [1] Battle Mountain has capitalized on this notoriety by staging an annual "Old Spice Armpit Festival", starting in 2002 which has since been done away with.

Ah, but you skipped over the good part...

"Its primary economic base is gold mining and, to a lesser extent, legal prostitution."

Nice :D:rolleyes:

But what about the caching opportunities!

I don't know, do the prostitutes cache? And no jokes about "First to Finds"

How can we compete with this? Since you want to be all nebby N@, all our girls wear babushkas. Most have a slightly nasally sound when they are calling you a jag off. Now they will make you a mean jumbo sandwich if you redup your room. Come join us dahntahn.

So love to hold it around here SLC (or in Utah anyway). I would need LOTS of help, though...

Well GBOTS, you have at least 3 other people that agree! I'm sure that Salt Lake City would be great! We have TONS of caches, great mountains for hiking/biking/camping/skiing. I KNOW that the fairgrounds would hold 500 people, plus there's 2 coin vendors in Utah, that I know of. We have in international airport here and some great events. Give us a shot. :D I know that it wouldn't be hard to form a group of people that would be willing to help.

Looks like the Minneapolis Saint Paul Area may have been overlooked.

I can pack up some lutefisk and lefse and have it shipped out to the committee if that would help. Ya sure, you betcha, ya know.

The Minneapolis/St Paul metro area has many of the same features as Chicago, plus it also has the Mall of America! There are wonderful caches throughout Minnesota and Wisconsin also.

Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP), which is a major hub for Northwest Airlines

The Minneapolis park system has been called the best-designed, best-financed and best-maintained in America

Today 15% of the city is parks and there are 770 square feet (71 m²) of parkland for each resident.

Home to the most golfers per capita of any city in the U.S.

The state of Minnesota has the nation's highest number of bicyclists, sport fishermen, and snow skiers per capita. Hennepin County has the second-highest number of horses per capita in the U.S.

The Public Works Department expanded the bicycle trail system from the Grand Rounds to 56 miles (90 km) of off-street commuter trails including the Midtown Greenway, the Light Rail Trail, Kenilworth Trail, Cedar Lake Trail and the West River Parkway Trail along the Mississippi.

I would recommend Stillwater, MN just on the fringes of the MSP metro area and a beautiful town.

Stillwater MN is a charming town about 20-30 min east of the Minneapolis/St Paul metro.

Stillwater is located in the St. Croix valley on the Minnesota Wisconsin border.

It is really beautiful country. Plus they have wineries and fly balloons there too. lol

Here is a quick blurb from ilovestillwater.com.

Explore the beautiful St. Croix Valley from charming Stillwater.

Unique shops, galleries and fine restaurants dot our historic downtown.

Lowell Park, along the river, and Pioneer Park, on the bluff, offer dramatic views of the river.

Visit wineries, take a balloon ride, hit the hiking or biking trails or just relax with a treatment in a spa.

Come for the day, or spend the weekend in one of our beautiful bed and breakfasts. You'll be glad you did!

Here is the climate data for Chaska, MN.

Chaska is a suburb of Minneapolis/St Paul.

Chaska is approximately the same latitude as Stillwater.

Several people from this area have already contacted me to pitch in and give a hand if this does come to town.

Ugh! I just looked up lutefisk...you can keep that please! My mom grew up in Mpls/St. Paul...she remembers her grandmother making lutefisk every year for Christmas.

I would try the lefse though. ;)

If they were really interested they would have sent you Penn State items. :)

That would negate my vote then. :P Go Ducks! #3 woot!

HEY..... :(:P:P ... I think sending Penn State items would have been appropriate. Please make sure that you look at the Penn State home schedule before deciding on Pittsburgh. I would hate for there to be a conflict :(

It should be some dinky town that will increase in population by a factor of 10 for the event. Something that put's geocaching in the news in a good way and puts this on the map as having economic clout.

Would Pittsburgh even notice an event?

We notice everything. One of the coolest things next year is the history that will be happening here. It is the city's 250th anniversary so there will be special events and such throughout the whole year. I know there are some trails being dedicated in October for where Washington spent the night and such. Will be a great place to be next year.

It would make the news for sure in Pocatello, Idaho. I will even help you put it on RK.

I watched the DVD you guys sent this morning, looks like you had a lot of fun making it. :P

I second that!

The DVD was a nice touch...but I was a bit confused. In the opening sequence, the car appeared to be driving on the wrong side of the double yellow line. (Of course this wouldn't be apparent to our friends across the pond!

LOL! That sequence was filmed driving through the Fort Pitt Tunnel...both lanes in that section of the tunnel are heading into Pittsburgh.

That is the Fort Pitt Tunnel and it is 2 lanes in the same direction. You could always go over Mount Washington if this scares you though. :(

I'll nominate the William B. Umstead State Park in Raleigh, NC It actually butts up to the airport, so very convenient for the air-travellers.

5,439 acres of woods + fields

Large campsites availabe

Twenty miles of hiking and biking trails

Public bathrooms available

You can probably find alot of info on the web about the park, here's a couple links:

Here's the tentative plan, forgive me for not posting it sooner:

November 7th, 2007: City bid proposals due, feel free to submit your bid anyway you see fit email, forum post etc.

November 7-14th, 2007: Review process by the committee (9key, AtlantaGal, Avroair, Cornerstone4 each ranking the bids. (explanation later).

November 15th: Announcement of the winning bid in forums

October 11,12,13: Proposed weekend for the GeoCoin Fest event (Columbus day)

Which leaves, It is 332 days, Or 10 months, 27 days excluding the end date. Notices for vendor participation would go out some time in December or January but this year they are given ample time to skip the Chinese New Year.

Not quite local, but sure close enough to do scouting for facilities, phone calls etc., netmeetings etc to get this of the ground for Atlanta

October 11,12,13: Proposed weekend for the GeoCoin Fest event (Columbus day)

:( At my job, Columbus Day does not qualify as a "Holiday" I have to work :P

Most employers don't give you Columbus Day off. I think Federal employees get it, but not many others. But school kids usually get it, and that is where the advantage is. It isn't a big travel holiday, so there aren't big family gatherings, full flights, full hotels and things like that to deal with.

Most people who work get vacation days, so grown ups take vacation, and the kids are out of school.
