Wonder if the cold air on the back of the gps will cause condensation inside.

Good point, there's cerntainly such a possibility. On the other hand, the unit is supposed to be water-tight. I hope there won't be much moisture trapped inside.

The operating temperature range is 5 - 158F according to Garmin, so at least teperature wise, I'm ok with the setup.

Viewing angle sucks, though, and the thing's gotta shake all over when you're driving, hanging by a string like that. You can get great mounts on ebay/amazon for $10. Not raining on your parade, just that it wouldn't work for me.

The mount depends the shape & angle of the vent. The vent needs to be slightly facing upward to let the GPS rest on it. It's easy to tell if the angle will be satisfactory or not, by hanging the unit against the vent before attempting.

With the right size of the string loop and position of the USB cable, I don't have any shaking problems and don't have to move my sight too far away from the road, but YMMV :)

At dollar stores, you can buy a cell phone holder for a dollar. These things are adjustable so most handheld GPS devices fit in them. All that is left to do is stick some velcro on the bottom of the holder and somewhere on the dash of the car. Satellite reception is much better on the dash.....except when cartopping a canoe or boat.

I had this cell phone holder from Radio Shack in my old car. It attaches to the AC vent and was able to hold my eXplorist. Costs more than a dollar, but I think it's along the lines of what rookie49 was referring to.

I used to car-top a 17' canoe on a 1995 Ford Escort... which was about 14' long. Looked AWESOME!!!
