Just playing
Hello fellow Geocachers, My son and I are new to this game but love every one of the 15 caches we have found up to now. We have been reading about the geocoins and travel bugs and would love to find one! We have gone to the local caches that say there is one in their cache but to our disappointement, it had already been taken. Is the web site ever updated to let us know the coin/bug has moved on and where we may look next? Thank you, Just playing in Oregon Quote Link to comment
+Miragee
Welcome to the Forums! Unfortunately, some people don't understand that Geocoins are supposed to travel and they trade for them thinking they are like other "SWAG." Other people actively "steal" Geocoins. We have such a thief in this area. If you find a cache that lists a TB or Geocoin in it, but the trackable isn't in the cache, you could email the owner of the TB or coin, or the cache owner. They can remove the trackable from the cache so others don't also head towards the cache hoping to find a long-gone coin or TB. Quote Link to comment
+Flatouts
Bummer people would do that... Sometimes it could also be that it's being held to go to it's next cache. I'm holding a couple TB's as I plan to further their route here soon when we go caching up north. It will bing them some of the way to their requested destination. I logged them as soon as I get access to do so, perhaps some people forget or just don't get around to it. Hopefully they will turn up one day as their value wont do you much good outside of the game. We're very new and nobody really told us much so I find it hard to believe anyone playing the game would mistake them for "SWAG." It's a big world out there lets hope those other folks can find something more productive to do with their time. Edited September 25, 2007 by Flatouts Quote Link to comment
+michigansnorkelers
Two things to do to improve finding travel bugs and geocoins. 1) Go to the TB or geocoins page. See WHEN it was placed in the cache. If it was weeks or months ago, it may be lost or stolen. 2) Check when the cache was last visited. If its been a while, then the listed traveler might still be there. If it is a popular cache, it might be taken but not logged yet. 3) Check the logs for mention of travelers being missing. Oops, that's 3! Quote Link to comment
Just playing
Thank you so much for all your replies. We will do those things and keep our hopes up that some day we will find one of these special items. What is Swag? Just Playing Quote Link to comment
+JeepinOregon
"Swag" is simply the term used to generically identify the "goodies" people trade. The above suggestions for finding those 'Coins/TBs is sound; don't sweat it, as it's just a matter of time before you find some Trackables (another term for 'Coins/TBs). +StarBrand
Based on my observations.... The best way to see a coin is to go to an event where some cachers will have albums of them. I find a Travel Bug in about every 5th cache I visit or about every 4th non-micro cache. They are out there. Quote Link to comment
+january14
And, once you start finding them, remember to log them as soon as you get to a computer. That way, not only will the owner know the traveler is safe and sound, but other cachers will know that it is gone as soon as they check the listing. Then, after a while, you get to where you find them in the caches, and then just ignore them cause you don't know when you'd be able to find a cache to move it too. You then start looking for the ones that are CUTE! and move them along, and eventually you just get to the point of discovering them in the cache and leaving them alone. GeoCoins are a rare thing indeed, and they get swooped up by collectors sometimes. Usually, they are nice items, and even though they may have been inexpensive when first bought, their value increases as time passes. The harder they are to find, the more likely they are to be stolen. :-( Quote Link to comment
