A stolen cache.

I ride quads with a guy who has since this incident moved to Florida. Basically, he and i were riding north of Sonoita, AZ when we stopped and he said something about a geocache. The conversation went something like this:

Him: "yeah, i was out here last week and i found a cool ammo can way up on top of that hilltop <points to rocky crag> with some trinket stuff in it."

Me: "Really... what did you do with it?"

Him: "oh, it's in my garage"

Me: "So you took it?... that was a geocache, dude. you're not supposed to take those. You have to put it back."

Him: "A geo-what?"

Me: <explanation of geocaching ...> "... and it's just jacked up to take one; whether or not you found it by mistake or not."

<uncomfortable silence follows...>

So, my question is how do i report this so no one goes up there and spends hours looking for this cache? I'm new to the sport. In fact, this is my first post here and i'm still waiting on my gps in the mail.

Thanks,

Daryl

EMail the cache owner via their profile and explain the situation.

I would add that it would be good to post a Needs Maintenance log with a short explanation that the cache may have been removed based on what someone told you. Simply emailing the owners from their profile won't flag the problem for the rest of the caching world.

Hopefully your friend will replace the cache soon.
Probably not, since the friend has moved.

I agree and this is one of the reasons why there is a "Needs Maintenance" log.

Okay, looks like i came to the right place for this. Thanks, all, for the insightful responses and welcomes. Yes, he is moved so no chance of getting the original can back up there. I pulled up gEarth and got some coordinates. This was my first time riding up in this area but i got as close as this:

31° 50.877'N

110° 45.749'W

I feel pretty confident in saying that this is within a few hundred feet of the cache. Again, I didn't see the actual location. He just kind of pointed and said "up there" :D . So, should i now just head over to the caches for this area and just keep looking for the closest one or is there a map view that you can look at with pushpins of all caches listed for an area?

Thanks again, everyone for helping me get this one off my conscious! :D

On gc.com, there's a link on the left menu called "hide and seek a cache". You can punch the coords in there and get the nearest caches from those coords.

The problem is that it doesn't sound like you have exact coords, just an aproximate guess?

Here's is the nearest caches to those coords. Look them over and see if any of them seem to be an ammo can, or have anything in the description that rings a bell with you.

Exactly, what i was going to say. Top Notch by Las Tres Chupacabras is the only one on that list that could be it. Any chance it could be listed with a different caching database? Again i'm new here... just grasping at straws now.

I'm not sure what it could be, if you're sure that's the spot. From reading the description and people's comments, it is definately not an ammo can, nor does it seem to have changed recently. :D

I guess there's a chance that it's a Terracache that just happens to be in the same spot, but as I'm not a member over there, I cannot check that for you.

I just checked at Terracaching.com and it doesn't look like there is a Terracache within 20 miles of those coordinates . . . :D

I wonder if someone placed the cache and then didn't get around to listing it . . . ? Or, perhaps it was listed and then Archived, but the cache owner didn't pick up their "Geolitter." :D

This is very possible. If that was it, I'd say - what a waste of a good ammo can - but in this case, ultimately not!

It looks like there was a letterbox hybrid about a mile and a half away (it was an ammo can) that was archived because it disapeared. Perhaps the box migrated! Helvetia Overlook

Is that the actual box? I just sent an email to him to get any more information on the can:

Hey Mark, how's life out east? I guess you would have started work by now. How is it? Do you remember telling me you found that ammo can up on top of that hill north of sonoita? It was when we went riding up north of the patagonia/sonoita area off of 83. Do you remember what was in it? You did say it was an ammo can, right? Anything you can remember about it would help.

Should hear something back soon. Thanks again, everyone for all the help in clearing this one up. Can't wait to get my GPS so i can actually start looking for some! :D

Good sleuthing . . . I bet that is the one. I wonder if the yellow Jeep was in it when it was taken . . . :)

Yes, this is the ammo can from the archived letterbox hybrid. It looks pretty distinctive, as far as ammo cans go, so hopefully that will help!

You're welcome, glad to help. It helps me pass the time. :D I hope you can get out there soon and start having some fun. :P

That was my first thought, poor jeep! That's the worst thing, when caches disapear with trackables in them. I always get a little pang when I see that. :D

Okay here's his response:

hey amigo, i'm currently brewing 5 gal of some christmas special and smoking a stogie. anyway, the

ammo can had information regarding air farce aircraft and a porn business card. i tossed the air farce

s*** (i figured it was not important) but kept the business card. i guess i need to "review their business model."

anyway,

i'm currently facing 6 months back in the desert but haven't told kelly yet because the decision hasn't been made. my current full bird is keeping me in his office until a decision is made.

hope you guys are well.

... and his response to the picture of the can Ambrosia posted:

no yellow thing, no flag, but a green can and a porn business card. dadgum, where did i put it? i have a

'funny feeling!" c'mon funny feeling!

I'm guessing the one in the picture isn't it... but definitely a cache, right?

What do you all think?
