+seventhings Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 Recently, “BruceS” came across a previously-undocumented Corps of Discovery II Lewis and Clark commemorative disk at Canoe Camp, Nez Perce National Historical Park, Ahaska, ID (about 33 miles east of Lewiston, ID). Being the responsible sort, he promptly waymarked the four-inch disk. This brings the number of waymarked Lewis and Clark commemoratives to 31. Rather than append this announcement to the earlier (long) thread on the subject Lewis and Clark - original topic, I thought I would provide a clean list of all the commemoratives that we know about. I solicit everyone’s efforts to keep their eyes peeled for more Lewis and Clark commemoratives. People who are knowledgeable on the subject suggest that there may be “dozens” of commemoratives (set by local agencies for local celebrations) that are unknown to the NGS or to the Geocaching/Waymarking community of enthusiasts. Here goes (in approximate order in which the disks were set or dedicated): 1. foxtrot_xray Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 Recently, “BruceS” came across a previously-undocumented Corps of Discovery II Lewis and Clark commemorative disk at Canoe Camp Darn. I'm going to assume that Lewis and Clark did not go through Georgia. Quote

+king.hubi Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 I think it's time for an update on this topic. I found another Corps of Discovery II - Lewis and Clark commemorative four-inch disk in Huntington, West Virginia. I can not say when it was monumented, but I guess it was between 2003 and 2006. The station is not listed in the NGS database nor on NOAA's special website for Corps of Discovery II marks. 32. David Harris Riverfront Park, Huntington, WV, 4-inch, no-PID, ??/??/???? +rogbarn Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 Is there a place to get a list of the Lewis & Clark disks that includes the coordinates? I could go to each page individually but thought I ask first. Quote

kayakbird Posted August 22, 2010 Posted August 22, 2010 This is a very interesting find. Do you have coordinates? Is it a survery mark or just a commenorative disk? Any other details? rogbarn & All, The BLM's Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument Boaters Guide indicates that there is a brass marker plate at Lewis & Clark's upriver campsites from 24 May through 31 May 1805. River miles downstream from Fort Benton are 55.7, 71.3, 76.8, 88.7, 103.3 (river right 1.5 mile downstream from the Stafford Ferry), 114.2, 133.1 and 145.5. SS1483 The six inch brass disk in a 9 in concrete post encased in a metal pipe which protrudes about 20 inches at Eagle Creek is at N47 59 01.5 W110 03 20.0. I do not believe that any have PID's. I have gone past them all in the last year plus, but this is the only one I have looked for (camped at Eagle Creek three nights last week then paddled back up to Coal Banks Landing). Contact me off list if you would like particulars on floating the Wild & Scenic Missouri. MEL Quote
+rogbarn Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 I offer my latest clean list of Lewis $ Clark, Corps of Discovery survey/commemorative disks. Many people have contributed to this effort, I am only the latest to try to compile and offer a good list to everyone else. As always, if you know of any errors in this list or of any disk that is not in the list, please post a message so everyone with an interest can stay up to date. The disks are listed by longitude from east to west. Seven disks, mentioned by kayakbird but without coordinates, are listed last. Format Seq # - Designation (if PID) or Description - State/County PID - Coordinates - Disk size Disk size is taken from either the data sheet description or the post from seventhings at the top of this thread. +rogbarn Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 The first problem has come up already. Many of the counties for non-PID disks are not the county at all but the closest town, city or other feature. Corrections are as follows: 3. Monticello - VA/Albemarle 4. David Harris Riverfront Park - WV/Cabell 18. Lewis and Clark Historical Park-Kaw Point - KS/Wyandotte 20. Fort Atkinson State Historical Park-small - NE/Washington 21. wister6813 Posted October 23, 2010 Posted October 23, 2010 (edited) I can confirm CORPS OF DISCOVERY CLARKSVILLE is a 12" disk. (photo of the disk from the datasheet) I was in Sioux City, Iowa a couple of weeks ago. There is a 12" disk at the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center. The disk is in the lawn to the north of the sculpture of Lewis, Clark and their dog, Seaman. I didn't bother to get the coordinates, but N42 29.450 W96 24.933 should get you in the right area. The docent at the center was surprised I asked about the disk, but he knew what I was asking about and where it was located. Edited October 23, 2010 by wister6813 Quote
