Halloween Cache Bash 2007

Recommended Posts

Hello there fellow cachers!

I have been having a think and with the end of October fastly approaching and not being contacted by anyone. I wondered if there was any plans going down for a halloween cache bash this year?

I am thinking of organising it and getting the page up as soon as possible.

This year - I think it should be with a bit of a twist, not the usual camp over in pub garden thing we have done for the last 3 years but just a night cache that will take a while and a few drinks in a pub somewhere nice......

The cache ofcourse I wouldnt like to give the game away, but the idea is

1. Exceptionally normal (for someone like me this may come as a surprise)

2. Something never tried before

3. Take about 2 hours in the dark, somewhere near Milton Keynes

4. Will require 3 teams at least and lots of brain.

5. No Kids! we wouldnt want to scare them out.

6. Wouldnt cost a bean!

Any takers? or am I too late for this idea.....

p.s. Don't try and guess what I have in mind. It will be beyond you ;o) honestly.

I thought events were meant to be open to ALL.

It says in the guidelines that events are supposed to be open for all, but if your event is in the middle of the night then surely it’s not suitable for all children. It’s silly to curtail any potential enjoyment of such an occasion and make all events suitable for everyone just out of some desire to adhere to political correctness. The only person who can tell me that I am wrong here is a moderator, anything else will be opinion, which is always welcome :):D . Cue moderator…

Having said that, though, “an event cache should not be set up for the sole purpose of drawing together cachers for an organized hunt of another cache.” :)

Regarding the camping business, why not have a cache bash at a hotel? Anyone who wants to come camp can make sure of their own accommodation the way – and where – they see fit; it was proposed as a “Halloween” event, not a “camping” event. :)

And having said that too, I ain’t coming anyway: a hotel would be cheaper than a tent and I can’t afford the petrol. Hey: you’re excluding me! :D

I think that means that you shouldn't create an event out of going out and grabbing some caches with your mates. I don't think this precludes an event which has some sort of special cache set for the purpose and/or hunting theme involved. I am sure there will be a mod along soon to explain it.

Surely kids are excluded from certain pub events anyway? Sometimes us members of the King Herod Appreciation Society like to socialise away from kids... and dogs! /me quickly runs away and hides :)

Pid, I heard down the grape vine that there may already be something in the offing, but your event certainly sounds like it could be fun. I will PM you...

Clearly if there is something else in the offing then I need not go to the trouble.....

I felt the Halloween bash had to happen because this year simply wouldnt be the same without it.

The no kids thing.....

I was just following tradition.....Never been a kid in sight the last 3 years :-)

Personally I would like to sort out the camping, but havent got a clue where to start looking.

It's easy, isn't it?

Make the event OPEN TO ALL and on the cache page highlight the potential dangers, time of event etc and see which cachers bring their kids.

If they do, they will be the responsible for them. Personally, I wouldn't take my kids to an all night type event/cache.

Next, whilst people are being pedantic: What about caches that are set? Aren't they meant to be for all? Setters then put the necessary attributes on the page and set the terrain and difficulty accordingly. Does anyone complain about this? No! So why start now?

People seem to take everything too literally nowadays. Commonsense prevails, surely.

Sensei TSKC,

I do not think anyone complained, I only asked a question, or to be more accurate (as there are apparently pedantic people here :) ) made a statement to highlight a potential problem with approval.

Your suggestion is quite correct though, let the parents decide, then the problem goes away.

For the record, neither of my youngest kids like the dark, so it would be off our list anyway.

Sarah, lets do a kids only one, it would be fun. :)

Well it is true that not all kids are made equal, and some can behave in a more mature and sensible manner than many adults! However, some pubs do just not allow kids and not all caches are suitable for everyone either. A kids only event would be fine by me, I would not bleat on about it on the forums... although I wonder if they would behave themselves with no adults there to supervise them... I have read "Lord of the Flies"! :) I hear lands End is nice this time of year... or Wick, that's a nice part of the country too! :D:):)

The

a few drinks in a pub somewhere nice......
is fine as a event and can be published

the

but just a night cache that will take a while
could be mentioned on the event page as a add on but not be the actual event, as organised cache hunts may not be listed as a geocache event.

And just to clear up things, yes events must be open to all means just that, it doesn't mean everyone has to attend. So if you look at published events there will always be a element to which anyone can attend with any additional activity's added on. We treat pub events just the same way, as many will allow children, usually just not near the bar area [in fact I attended one event were the venue was changed on the day, due to the chosen establishment refusing to allow children]

And before some clever clogs points it out, yes I'm aware the Lancs camping event does not yet have the required open to all element. It was published early to allow those who wished to camp to enable them to attend the event, book their pitches and make other plans. The event owner has been warned that if the required "Open to All" element is not added the event will be Retracted as it will not meet the guidelines

Needless the say the cache will meet ALL nesscesary guidelines - WHATEVER they may be. I went about it the wrong way, assuming people would understand the theme last year etc etc etc.

Sensei summed it up.

So then, back on topic......

Ideas, Suggestions for Halloween all can be spoken about right here!

Glad to hear you are also organising an event.

The Chainsaw masacre from last year will again be a possibility at the same venue as last year for me too, although this year I beleive its "Things that go bump in the night .... "

I have a few things to attend to over the next couple of days and then I will get a page together too.... mine is a camping affair and its got a pub and it will undoubtedly scare the pants off any of the younger cachers that DARE to come along ... mind you .. it has been known for a few screams to be heard from Sue Phillimore and the notorious sister act that is Kerry and Nat :)

So Pid ... lets organise weekend events a week apart and we can both go to both of them :)

Failing that ... Have a good time ... cos we intend too as well.

Can I put a request in for 'regular' events to move around a little? Even if it's a few miles, it hopefully means there's lots in the area to find as well as the event. Holding events at the same pub or whatever over and over is lovely, but it does mean visitors may have to travel even further to make it a caching day out... This isn't so much of an issue in London, mind.

On the hallowe'en front, I really enjoyed last year's local-ish do and would be keen to see what Pid comes up with too.

I'm one of them BOF's who puts a sign on the door at Halloween saying "No Trick or Treat" but I always put a big smiley face on it. I've done that ever since one of my little ones had the pants scared off them by some daft twit in a costume one year and another time constant doorbell ringing made it difficult to settle the baby. Halloween seems to be growing in popularity, but as a family we choose not to join in. In our local area we have something called Light Parties instead, although we haven't been to them either, but I gather they are much less scary for the kiddies. You can find out about them by googling Halloween alternatives I expect, if you really want to. Sooooo, we shan't be joining you for your :D spooky :) activities, but hope you have a seriously good time as you undoubtedly will. :):D:)

I'm missing something here... who's excluded?

The campsite apparently will only allow a limited No of Day Visitors, so the site is not open to all. Hence the need for something else to be sorted out.

Having just spoken to Mark on the phone, no need to worry - there is no issue here cos he has just sorted a venue for day visitors which makes it open to all. Will be a while before he is at his 'puter and able to update the listing, so just clarifying on his behalf. :):):)

I was under the impression that geocaching was a family game and that event had to be available to everyone, but on your post it says no kids....not a problem for me as its a bit too far away but i thinking of families with kids that will be excluded.

Edit: Now see this has been posted already.

People seem mainly to be objecting to the "no kids" thing - so how is this problem solved when events are in over 18s pubs?

I have never seen a pub event listed that was at a pub that did not allow kids, not to say there have not been any though - I wonder where our esteemed reviewers are holding their event B)B)

This was something that was checked in person with the management of the establishment by the Event organiser, whilst doing some tasting of their wares :(

Any event that is held in a public house after 8pm is by law a no kids event. A public house children's licence only allows children under the age of 14 access until 8pm.

As the said event is designed for an evenings Halloween, one would think you would be in the pub after 8pm?? Thus meaning that the good law of this land dictates that it is a no kids event.

The 'GUIDELINES' say that it should be open for all, but as they are only guidelines in this instance they can't always be met.

This particular pub advertises that it caters for private parties. I would presume for the landlord to be able to allow kids after 8pm that he has got you in a separate room and treating the get together as private function?

I was thinking of a Horror FlashMob Event in two or three places rolling from one location to the next dressed as ghouls for the night. Ghouling at each location for atleast 15 minutes before moving on to claim the next smiley and so on.

Could be worked into a MAIN event depending on it;'s location. I am off to get me black cape and hood....

Aiiii

This I believe all changed when the Licencing Act 2003 was implemented in November 2005

"Under the Act it is unlawful to allow any unaccompanied child under the age of 16 to be present on authorised premises which are exclusively or primarily used for supply and consumption of alcohol on the premises. This applies to premises operating under a premises licence, a club premises certificate or a temporary event notice. In effect, this applies to most pubs and bars where restaurant and food facilities are not provided as a permanent feature or attraction."

Anyone wanting a little more info on the subject can take a look at

Nice reply StuartP but can you take that someplace else ... another thread maybe .. .and let this one remain on topic about Haloween events in general.

SP .... you wish is my command ... another Ghostly site already ear marked for 2008 ... but was a little slow in agreeing for this years ... hence the contuance at Marston for one more night.

Anyone with a warped sense of horror or humour that thinks of a (safe) stunt we might include in the trail of "things that go bump in the night"... email me and let me know ... there are some really really horrible things out there ... and I met a lot of them now
