We are planning on spending the last weekend (27th & 28th) of October at Laughlin, NV. There are a few benchmarks that we are planning on recovering along the NV/CA border. The ones we are planning on are "VEX, HOUSE, FORKS, T 136, & T 136 High".

Anyone who is interested in trying for these very old marks, is welcome to come along and have a GO at it with us.

Here is a shot of Google showing some of the old marks in the area. Many have never been recovered.

Vex is near the bottom of the picture along with House and Forks. Flattop & Spirit are beyond our capabilities, but if someone wants a challenge, they are waiting!

Our schedule has a little leeway in it, a week either way of the given dates.

Anyone ready?

Fossillady, the first weekend in November would be fine with us....

Klemmer, you will have to check with TeddyBearMamma for the 3rd and 4th of November instead of the Oct. date. Is there a time period for anyone else that was considering joining us that would work better? Just state the days...and we will all come to an agreement. It is far enough into the future to be able to move it one way or the other, and the weather is pretty stable at that time of the year, that we won't have to worry about snow or monsoons.

We are thinking of staying at the newly named Tropicana Express (it used to be the Ramada Express), in Laughlin, NV. We have not called on our reservations yet, until we get the days set that are the easiest for everyone else to be able to come join us for some benchmarking fun. There are no holidays close to that time, so there should be plenty of cheap rooms available at any of the casino/hotels.

Shorbird, sorry that you will not be able to make it but, we will definitly post pictures so you will be able to drool a little. :D

I just realized that 11/4/07 is the last day of the poker run so what we find would be loggable. How many can we find?

As many as you want. After we find a few and get tired, you could press on while we head back to get a bite to eat and rest. Or we could follow you around and watch the fun. :)

There are a lot more marks there, we only chose those that we haven't found yet and were old and interesting to us, and a few that were way beyond us, to whet the appetite of those that enjoy a physical challenge.

So, if it is virgin territory for anyone - it is wide open for everyone to wear yourselves out, if you so choose.

Sounds like fun!

That weekend works for us! Or maybe just me. Julie having foot surgery in October (early in the month), so not sure how she will be doing by then, but she's not much on benchmarking anyway. She might come along for the ride, and hang out in Laughlin.

Patty? You interested?

It does sound like a fun weekend, but I need to cut back on my travel expenses for a while, after my upcoming Disneyland trip. I may go back to the Yosemite area with friends for a couple of days to finish some benchmarks we didn't get to last week, but if I do, I'll stay with other friends who live nearby, not at the nearly-$200-a-night Yosemite Lodge.

I hope those of you who do go on this trip have a great time!

Klemmer, Shirley's not too crazy about heights, especially concerning VEX, so she will remain at the command post (the comfort of the truck :D) with the radio in case help should be required.

Here is a picture of the location of VEX. I tried the ascent up and over the Arch, but there is one spot where I was prevented from continuing forward due to the steep angle and the fact that it is slickrock sandstone. I tried the ascent from the saddle on the right and at about 12 feet up the handholds started coming off the wall, so I retreated. I went to the back side where there is a large alcove, but the way up is sheer walls.

That only leaves the face of the ridge to the right of the arch as the last hope of reaching the top where the drillhole is located. Get your rest!!

None of the rest on our "want to do" list are this extreme and Shirley will be able to ascend the small hills where they are located.

Fossillady, are you up for VEX?

Check along the main highway, there is a line where we have recovered most of the marks. There is also a line of marks along the old highway that dates from the 1930's and has updated coordinates ( ).

We will be staying (on the 2nd, 3rd & 4th of Nov.) at the Tropicana Express (the old Ramada Express) in Laughlin. We will be wearing our "benchmarking pins" that we got from stvanme for our previous contest, so you will be able to recognize us.

There's plenty of room for any other benchmarkers that can get there at that time. We will have room in our truck if anyone is worried about getting to some of these marks.

Looking forward to this excursion.

Get my rest???? You mean bring a parachute?? Did I say I'm not much for heights either? Well, I guess we'll see what we can do...... I do have a 30 foot Aluminum extension ladder, but I can't see hauling out there...... Hmmm..... I always wanted to have one of these! Which one do you think, John? How far a walk will it be from from my 4WD Jeep Grand Cherokee?

The first time I saw one of these was when I was with a group of geocachers, and Elin pulls one out of the trunk of her battery-car (Toyota Prius), and we used it to retrive a cache by the legendary OtisPug. To my knowledge (as of a couple months ago when I walked by there), the cache is still there (even though archived). You either need a ladder, or a large truck to stand on. The ladder worked very nicely (yes, I went up it).

How good is that Jeep? Is you drive up that saddle to the right of the ridge maybe we can stand on top of it and scramble on up from there.

The hike from the road is only 3 - 4 hundred yards. Easy walk until you get to the base of the ridge and then it's all UPHILL. From the top of the saddle it is only 50 feet to the benchmark (straight up!).

Of course, even I wouldn't try driving up the saddle, with or without the Hemi! :):)

Not sure if I can be in the area on the prescribed date, but I have been known to climb 5.7 routes unroped, from time to time. The rest of you would be on your own!

I didn't sign up for mountian climbing. I thought this trip was for "old farts" like me. I am not sure I will even have my 4x4 by then. I am driving a 2 wheel drive at the moment and my truck is in the shop. We will have to see.

That's no mountain. It is the only tough one on the list & I want to try one last time to get to it. All the others are easy to get to some are on some Small hills (maybe 75 -100 feet high) and nothing hazardous.

We have an extra seat in our pick-up so you wouldn't need to have a 4x4 or do any driving. Actually, most of the marks can be reached using 2 wheel drive if you have some ground clearance.

There's some easy 1898 marks just waiting.

If you can make it and start to go up towards VEX, John would follow and the rest of us would cheer you guys on. Hope we can meet you on the 3rd and 4th of Nov. :)

fossillady,

Don't you worry about being an oldfart...it comes pretty natural to me. No mountain climbing for me either. :)

68-eldo,

John was just saying that if he cannot get to that dang mark he would just have to rent a helicopter!

They sure named that mark correctly....John is VEXed by it.

Thought I'd bump this to the top. I am assuming this is still a go and is only 2 weeks away. I am without my truck so I would like to use your spare seat, John and Shirley. I am ready for some exploring.

Yes! It is still on and you are welcome to ride in our Hemi. Are we ready? Of course, always ready to meet in person the good people who have posted in these forums and go hunting and talk about our addiction. It should be a fun time.

Are you staying at the Tropicana Express also?

PM or E-mail us as to when you plan on arriving.
