+geoSpartan
I was thinking about setting up a DVD Exchange and I know there are a few out there. My question are as a cache owner, does it take more work and effort to manage? I would assume no "R" rated movies, which means "the 300" ("This is Sparta") is out, but I can deal with that, thats reasonable. What about PG13? PG13 means no one under 13 without a parent, but don't most kids under 13 cache with an adult? Can I just put a warning that there maybe PG13 movies in the cache? Any other things to be aware of? Besides movies magically disappearing without being replaced with another one. Edited August 10, 2007 by geoSpartan Quote Link to comment
+Isonzo Karst
There are a couple of these in my area. The principle issue seems to be simply that there are very few trades made. Mostly people don't head out to geocache carrying a DVD. Movies don't disappear, the original contents are largely in place in the one nearest me, placed Feb 05. Quote Link to comment
mtbikernate
I visited one recently. I did not have a video to trade, and honestly, the movies in the cache weren't something I'd want to trade for, anyway. This particular cache, while fairly easy to reach and find, has VERY few visitors. I was the only visitor since March on this one. Quote Link to comment
CacheNCarryMA
"No bad movies" would mean "The 300" ("This is Sparta") is out. But I digress. Edited August 10, 2007 by CacheNCarryMA Quote Link to comment

Surely parents have control over their DVD players, right? Sheesh, I'm tired of having to help police other folk's critters. Quote Link to comment
J'nK
Put whatever rated movies in the cache you wish, minus XXX Adult films. Quote Link to comment

You're right about most people not having a DVD with them when they cache. I wonder why more people don't do their homework before they go -- they'd figure out they needed a DVD and we all have ones we can part with.... I think it's a great idea- I'm surprised there aren't more like this. Quote Link to comment
+Sevilon
As a parent of young children, I just wanted to comment on the movie rating aspect. I don't see why it would matter if there were R rated movies, or PG13, or whatever. As long as there weren't X rated movies in the cache, I think anything else would be fine. Just like with any other swag, if families with young kids visit, they may be more likely to take/leave a kid's movie (or in another cache, a toy), but I don't think a child looking in a cache with a rated R movie in it is any different than a child walking through the video rental store on his way to the kid's section. Mom and dad can just say no to any movie they think is inappropriate for their own kids. Quote Link to comment

But if it was in the cache listing that that particular cache was set up with the main idea of trading DVDs wouldn't cachers come prepared? I personally like the idea. If you go to your local second hand store you can usually pick up some good DVDs at a real good price(ie. 3 for $10, etc.). As long as they aren't scratched, a previously viewed DVD plays just the same as a new one. I would just make sure your cache is as water tight as possible. Cheers! I agree that policing other's children is not something I want to do, I'd also have to say that parents, today, don't have control over much in their children's lives, especially media content. Regarding the cache, we have a local CD cache, the CDs take up a lot of room and stop other kinds of swag from being placed. The idea works but I don't think too successfully. Quote Link to comment

You were reading my mind....I mean since I assume most pre-teen and under kids would cache with their parents (though when I was 12 I would regularly ride my bike after school in a set of woods I now have two caches in, and if caching were invented 25 or 30 years ago........anyway back on topic), the parents should be of enough sound mind and body to know what DVD's to take and which not; yes I would say don't allow X rated movies (especially if there's some pretty blatant stuff to see on the jacket cover), but cmon......parents have to do a little more parenting out there you know. +usyoopers
We have 2 caches of that type placed. They are both placed in rest areas and designated as a media swap for folks on the road. We placed them with the thought of trades for books, cd's and dvd's...just the thing you might need on a long road trip. So far they have been very well received, people don't always have the right swag with them but many do. I never gave thought to restricting the dvd's to pg13 or under (no porn of course!) if the cache is at a rest stop I don't think any small children are arriving by themselves and the parents should be able to moniter the selections themselves! JohnE_Cache
There's a DVD exchange cache I did. Kinda felt sorry for the owner. He started out placing cool, top-rated Horror flicks in there. By the time I got there it was mainly stupid kid movies...Yui-gee-oh and other lame titles. Somehow, I don't think that was his intent...to give out free horror movies while getting lame dvds kids outgrew. Quote Link to comment
+TheSolisPirates
As a parent, I don't mind what ratings are in the cache as long as they are not above NC-17. Obviously, if my kids are with me caching (and they don't cache alone) then I have control over what movie gets selected to take. My only concern would be opening the cache to see a bunch of naked women on a DVD for adults only. That said, I think most geocachers would respect your wishes if you noted only a certain rating or movie type be left in the cache. I hope your cache works out well....wish there were some like this in my area! Quote Link to comment

Bill Nope, most cachers I know just go out with a loaded GPS, and maybe a PDA. We often don't even look at a cache page unless we need a hint or want to read previous logs. It's about the journey and adventure, not the swag in the cache for us. Quote Link to comment
