What's these geographical marks?

Recommended Posts

One of two things I can think of:

either

recent 'grass' cutting they do it near Glossop no idea what its for but there are strangle patterns on the hill tops where the bracken etc has been cut in patterns.

or ancient earth workings they could be fields farmed for thousands of years in the same way, you only see these from up high, I recall something vaguely from history at school a few (well quite a lot really  ) years ago.

Hi

These marks are normally as a result of shearing or burning the heather as part of 'management' of the moors. The bare area allows the young heather and other plants such as bilberries to grow, this is often done in areas where grouse or other game live or are reared so that they can feed on the young shoots and berries.

See: http://www.defra.gov.uk/rural/uplands/burning.htm

I might be totally wrong of course.

Hi again

Having now realised where these marks are (I'd assumed they were near the OP's location but they are just up the road from me) I know that it IS moors management for grouse and partridge breeding (and then blowing the poor little buggers to bits!). There are a lot more similar marks further south on the ground above the limestone cliffs.

Thanks Andy, Going to be spending a couple of days there next weekend (Trail Park - Brymbo), so will try and find the time to have a look at them and maybe find the odd cache!

Cheers
