City Navigator 2008

Not to kick a dead horse here but there has been a lot of discussion about City Navigator North America 2008. Currently CN 2008 is only available as an update to CN version 8. We keep talking about when it will be available as a stand alone DVD product to load onto our new receivers. After talking with representatives from Garmin, TigerGPS and REI, NO ONE has heard that this update will be released as a stand alone version in the foreseeable future. For those of us who have new Garmin GPSr's with no old version of CN to upgrade that puts us in a pickle. In order to get current maps that means 1. Purchace $140 CN v8 and $50+ 2008 upgrade 2. Purchace CN v8 and live with older maps or 3. Wait for who knows how long until CN 2008 is released as it's own stand alone product. I'm not sure what Garmin's marketing strategy is with this update. If I pay the $140 for the newest version of City Navigator why shouldn't I get the most updated maps?

I've never seen a time when they didn't come out with a full version. The update version comes out first, then the full version, then the equivalent MetroGuide version.

Doubt there will be that big of a difference between CN8 & CN2008.

I updated from CS7 to CN8 last year & my area had few changes.

FWIW, v8 has 5,428,786 POI's and 2008 has 6,114,707 POI's, a 12.6% increase. v8 has 6,118,614 miles of roads and 2008 has 6,151,038 miles, a 5.3% increase.

I'm still using City Select v6. If they ever come out with a full version of City Navigator 2008 I may decide to upgrade. As far as I can tell though, they STILL don't have the neighborhood where my daughter lives on the maps. Her neighborhood is at least 2 years old and, according to the maps, doesn't exist at all.

I hope they have done something to the routing info as well. In the town where I live there has NEVER been a freeway onramp at 5th avenue and, when I look at the map on my computer or GPS there isn't one shown there either. However, autorouting always wants me to get on the freeway there. What's up with that?

That's what I'm using too. I was also waiting until the maps got fixed for certain areas. The latest maps should be using mid-2006 data, so I don't understand why a neighorhood that is two years old wouldn't show up.

I checked the online viewer for v2008 and her neighborhood in Belgrade, MT. still doesn't show. She lives on Tulip Avenue which doesn't seem to exist. Seems pretty lame to me.

Thrak, you do realize you can submit the errors you find to Navteq the supplier of garmins map data? why complain when you can do something about it.

I bet he didn't know. I didn't know you could do that. Thanks! :)

I just received this from Garmin Support after specifically asking if they were having issues with NT:

Dear Lee,

Thank you for contacting Garmin International,

City Navigator NT will work just fine with your 60CSx the only

differenece between NT and Non NT version is compression. For instance

you can download all of North America on to a 1 gig micro SD card with

NT. Non NT you would need 2 gigs.

With Best Regards,

So, "who's on first base"? Is there really a problem with CNNA v8 and the 60CSx or not???

I called Customer support yesterday to ask when the full version of CNNA 2008 would be released as I too have a new 60 Csx being shipped, and the guy I talked to said he was told earlier in the day they would be shipping to retailers in the next couple of days. I currently use City Select v.6 and will temporarily load that and continue to wait. Looking at 2008 online, a lot of streets have been added in this fast growing NW Arkansas area.

That does seem lame. Does it show on Google Maps?

It shows on Google Earth. Google maps says it is unable to locate information for that address.

I have heard rumor that Garmin would not release MG 2008, due to the patch that give this autorouting.

City Navigator Europa v9 was first released on GPS september 2006.

First sight of MG v9 was just now in July 2007.

If you try to order it, you may still get v8

I bet that they do release MG NA 2008. It has been somewhat common knowledge for years that using sendmap to transfer the maps to the gps will keep routing info. However doing so won't transfer the info needed to do a "find by name" which really isn't a big deal since "find nearest" would still work fine. So someone came up with a convoluted process so that "find by name" would still work. Then someone wrote a program to automate the process, then the .tdb patch. All that so you could still do a "find by name", but people have been using sendmap to load MG maps with routing to the gps for years.

There is a problem using CNNANT 2008 (v9) with a 60CSx but Garmin is working on a firmware update to fix it.

What is the specific problem? Sorry - been away from the forums for a while.
