Barrikady
Hi, Anyone do GPS photo linking on a Mac. I have some questions regarding track selection and how to mingle my photos with the tracks.. Yes, I am doing geo-photo linking with my Mac. I use: Load My Tracks <http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/20893> Google Earth <http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/20124/google-earth> HodahGeo <http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/24549> Canon digital camera Mac G5/OSX Garmin 60Cx The key to geo-photo linking is HoudahGeo. I have tried other programs, but HoudahGeo is by far the best. Rather than attempt to tell you what steps are necessary to make it all happen, I suggest you gather the software and give it a spin. Let me know if you have a problem. Quote Link to comment
+ScoutingWV
Not on a Mac ... but I've started use the exif info for my digital pics to find the time they were shot and place them at that point on the track. Flickr.com uses this method and they call it geotagging. I have a friend using a Mac with his GPS - anything I could ask him for you? email me if there is. Quote Link to comment

As far as creating the tracks do you turn on the tracks at the start of each hunt and turn them off after it finishes? Could you elaborate a little on creating the tracks? That may be where my trouble is.. as a side note, I was trying to use GPSphotolinker, but i guess try hodahgeo after i figure out the tracking part. Quote Link to comment

Let me know if you have a problem. Did you have any issues with the date being modified on the tracks? Do you save the tracks on the 60cs? REPLY: "Date being modified on the tracks?" Sorry, but I don't understand the question. "Do you save the tracks on the 60cs?" Yes, I do save the tracks to the MicroSD card, but I download the track data to the computer each day, so I don't use the saved tracks for geocoding. As far as creating the tracks do you turn on the tracks at the start of each hunt and turn them off after it finishes? REPLY: I geo-photo link when I am hiking. I turn on the 60Cx at the begining of the hike and turn it off when the hike is complete. I have the track mode set to on during the hike. Could you elaborate a little on creating the tracks? That may be where my trouble is.. REPLY: Well, I'm not really sure what you mean. I turn the GPS on, and I record the track for the entire length of the hike. I also ensure that the clock in the camera (I have a Canon 20D and a Canon SD 700is) is set to the exact same time as the clock in the GPS. This is a crucial step. If the clocks are not syncronized, then the photos will appear at the wrong locations on Google Earth. as a side note, I was trying to use GPSphotolinker, but i guess try hodahgeo after i figure out the tracking part. REPLY: I tried GPSphotolinker and was unhappy with the results and the steps necessary to get it to work correctly. HoudahGeo is a far superior piece of software. It is easy to use and many of the necessary steps are automated. You can download a demo version that is limited to three photos. I suggest you grab a demo of HoudahGeo. Take your GPS, walk a few hundred feet, take three photos, and download the track in the GPX format using LoadMyTracks. Download the photos to iPhoto or GraphicConverter. Fire up HoudahGeo, and follow the three step procedure. When you're finished, you will see your track in Google Earth and each of the three photos will appear on the track exactly where you took each photo. It's very cool! I hope I answered your questions to your satisfaction. Let me know if you have any additional questions. Quote Link to comment
+jchiar
Well my camera time is within 2 secs. I tried HoudaGPS but no luck. HoudaGPS doesnt seem to like my track. I opened my track in Trailrunner and its the correct GPS locations. When I use houda GPS to download directly, it only like my GEOCACHE locationsm and not my tracks.. I followed the same step of turning on GPS when i start and turning off after my cachefind. I email the houda techsupport and I hope they have an answer for me.. Quote Link to comment

+jchiar
Thanks for all your help While I got it to work with both GPSphotolinker and Hoodah, Hooda's export to google earth looks different. Nicer cause the image appear on google earth as pictures and not just pins. I guess this is actually a result of the iphototogoogle earth plugin for iphoto though, not a GPSphotolinker issue. macnerd
Watch out when you save your track log. Garmin units will strip the time stamp information when you save the log so you can't use saved logs to geotagging, only active logs will work. On the new Vista HCx a .gpx file gets saved to the SD card doesn't ever get the date/time stripped from it even when you save your track log. This works perfect if you have one of the new Garmins with the SD card. Edited July 29, 2007 by macnerd Quote Link to comment
