CN 2008 available anywhere?

Hi all,

I just bought my first GPSr, a Vista HCx. I've ordered the topo maps I need for for the backpacking trip we've got coming up in a few weeks. But I'd like to get the City Navigator maps before that trip as well.

Is the 2008 version of City Navigator available anywhere on DVD right now? If not, any idea where it would likely show up first? While I hate to buy last year's version just when the new version is coming out, if it doesn't show up in the next week or two, I might have to do that -- part of the Wife Acceptance Factor was that we could use it to navigate in the car on that trip as well as on the trail, so it would be unfortunate of me to try to drive around using the basemap.

Thanks for any help or suggestions you can provide!

I ended up breaking down and calling Garmin to ask about it; the person with whom I spoke insisted that the website is just "behind," and if you order online, you'll get the 2008 version. I haven't yet received it to confirm that this is true.

The City Navigator NT I ordered showed up today, and despite of what I was told by Garmin (twice -- on the phone and in an email), it's version 8. Back to the phone, I guess.

I somehow thought that would be the case. I really want/need CN NT 2008 bad. But refuse to pay

till i get actual confirmation it will be 2008. Can't see paying that kind of money for an upgrade

when its nearly as much as the initial purchase.

Thank You for being brave enuff to test the waters for us. Sorry it didn't work out better. Hopefully, you are

not out the 100 dollor for the upgrade.

I have been trying to get a straight answer for quite a while. I can send you a copy of an e-mail from Garmin stating unequivocally that CN NA NT 2008 would be delivered on an order from their website.

The CN NA NT 2008 update DVD is very clearly labeled with "2008" while the full version on Garmin's site has had all evidence of a version removed. I'm getting impatient, but I guess that we have to assume that until Garmin labels it 2008, it doesn't matter whet they say or e-mail.

Yea, i already read the e-mail from them saying it was going to be 2008 instead of what was on the site. But i didn't believe them.. and now see i was right.

Let us know what happens.. And if they do the "right thing". We are behind ya, the force is with you.

You should get NA v2008 NT

Always use NT maps with new units.

I can't imagine why you would make such a statement........... :o

From reading the forum, both work well. I personally want the NT one myself, but for people

that want non-NT, seen nothing wrong with that.

In fact, according to a review i read by

someone who updated to the new 2008 non-nt, it takes up a lot less room then before. I'm

hopeing the NT version will also takes up less room then before on the card. And there is

other features that wasn't there before. So that is good news for all of us, NT or non-NT. Only

bad thing reviewer didn't care for was only one un-lock code now. Everything else was very positive

maken me more excited to get it, once it comes out!!

I'm still using City Select v6. I haven't heard of any really compelling reasons to purchase City Navigator. It sounds like there are updated POIs and, perhaps some road updates, but I can't really verify if the new version is significantly better. I've looked at the viewer online and couldn't get down to enough detail to verify if the errors I know about have been fixed or not.

This will mean nothing to you if you don't own a Garmin mapping GPS and use MapSource City Select or City Navigator.

I ordered and received mine. A few notes from my experience over the last few days:

1. You used to be able to "unlock" two devices per licensed copy. Not anymore. One per license. That hurts because I have two licenses but three units...

2. Google Earth is now a view option from within MapSource and overlays your tracks, waypoints, routes etc into the Google view (e.g. hi-res satellite image!).

3. Street maps for northern central WV seem to be greatly improved - I found lots of fixes that were needed particularly on the CR's and the more accurate placement and naming of the major arteries.

4. Updated USB driver with a system tray background task that watches for your GPS to appear connected and pops up a menu of choices when it does.

5. Map compression is better - takes less GPSr memory for same maps

6. Map segment boundaries changed. It looks like they diced the maps up differently. Previously the boundaries were rectangular and not done with regard to territory they contained - now they are broken up along geographic or political boundaries (e.g. the Morgantown segment follows the PA border to the north, Ohio to the west, and county and MD state borders to the south and east. Not sure how much benefit that provides but it's more logical.

7. It costs more...

If you have more than one unit and you previously had them both unlocked under one license, you will need to buy another full license. My sense is that it might make more sense to buy a new copy in the retail market when it comes out because later when you go for an update, it will be cheaper - not sure you can get an update price on a purchase of "additional area" from the Garmin web site.

This is what i was referring too.. This is a review from another geocaching website by someone with a first hand look at the 2008 version. I hope he don't mind i posted this here. Used without permission.

I have also just now found another link. Worth a read.

Just to clarify, I believe that nos. 2 & 4 were covered in the last MapSource update (6.12.4) and are available regardless of what mapping product you have.

The woman with whom I spoke this morning seemed genuinely surprised to hear that I was sent v8; apparently the customer service folks and the fulfillment people aren't on the same page. "My supervisor is going to check on it and find out how we're going to handle this; I will call you back." Thus far no callback.

Do any b&m stores have copies of the full version yet? I'm moving in about a week, so shipping it isn't the best idea, especially since it seems like a few people have received the wrong version. I don't have time for that, heh.

It'd be nice to have my GPS helping me not get lost on a 3000 mile drive.

My City Navigator North America NT 2008 update DVD shipped today.

I am looking for the full, non-update version, as I just bought my first GPS receiver.

I called back on Friday and talked to a couple of very nice but questionably helpful people, and the impression I walked away with is that nobody at Garmin has any idea what version they're shipping. Since the part number has not changed from v8 to 2008, the customer service folks can't look at the computer and tell what the warehouse has, etc. Everyone who can take your order has been told that 2008 is what's shipping right now, but as I and others have found out, that's not necessarily the case.

I was told to go ahead and open and install v8, and that they would send me the 2008 update version at no charge. Frankly, I'll believe it when it arrives. I expect to be back on the phone in another week or so trying to figure out if that's actually going to happen.

Why NT

1. They do take less space on the GPS

2. They contain more routing information that can be used by new GPS.

3. Has larger segment size. All GPS do suffer from the 2025 segment limit, so you would save segment, so you can add more Topo maps etc.

Non-NT map will work, but it's made for older unit with less memory space.

Where did you get #2 from? That's the first I've heard of that.

I also recently bought my 60csx and have held off buying CN V8 because I heard 2008 (V9) was coming in August. I called and talked to Garmin last week and heard that 2008 had started shipping to some retail stores. (Amazing that I would have thought Amazon.com would obvious). I have yet to find it listed anywhere when searching.

I rec'd this response on 7/23 from Garmin.

Thank you for contacting Garmin International,

I do not have a release date for the City Navigator 2008 at this time. The NT

version of City Navigator will take up less space on your memory card then the

non-NT version that is the only difference.

Ok, so just got off phone with Garmin, they apologized, rechecked the order, told me to toss the ver 8.0 and my new cd would be shipped today... so here is hoping.

Boy am I confused.. One dept says it is shipping, the other has set up for my return of the product:

Thank you for contacting Garmin International, I apologize you were send the version 8. Currently, the 2008 version is not shipping. I have set up a return for credit for you. Here is the address to send the map back to:

Garmin International

Dock Door #20

:)

From other posts on ver 2008, sounds like it's not ready for prime time yet, if so i will go ahead and load ver 8.0 and wait for finished upgrade.

Ok, so I sent em's back and forth, shipping and sales were not in sync and the full version is not shipping yet. I had received ver 8.0 and was thinking maybe they would come thru with the swap, but no luck..

So then sent em asking if I kept 8.0 and maybe they would send me the upgrade for free when the current dust settles and here was the answer I got back today:

"Unfortunately, at this time, I cannot promise we would be able to do a free update to the new version if you were to load the version 8 at this time due to royalties paid to the mapping company. I would suggest sending the full version for the full credit and waiting for the full version of 2008. Again, I apologize for you having to go through all this.

So looks like no dice.

Was really wishing I could load new software with my new 60 Csx.. Looks like I will have to wait a bit longer..

I can't quite figure out what's going on with Garmin's customer support. I had the same problem and was told to send it back, but then once I called back again she told me to go ahead and install v8 and they'd send me the update when it came out. The update arrived today, not that I've been able to get it working yet.

One hand definitely doesn't know what the other is doing at Garmin, I'm afraid.

Just some update on the NA 2008 maps.

They are made from Navteq Q4 2006 data.

In the mean time Navteq has released Q1 2007 and Q2 2007 before Garmin did release NA v2008.

So calling this 2008 maps, is some missleading.

NT maps also do contain information needed for traffic receivers, compare to non-NT

Nice thing about the forum is you learn stuff... My son has City Select ver 7 so am going to run it on my 60Csx until CN 2008 comes out.

I am glad they are holding up release of the new software until it is more ready to go than maybe MS would do, however, being slightly ocd, can't focus, eat or sleep until it is released and I have it..

You know we were doing the same thing last September 2006. I remember waiting and waiting for the new release of CN v8. Now I have a CNNANT 2008 Update that I can’t load on my 60CSx. I’m not sure which feels better, waiting or having it and not being functional? I’m confident Garmin will make it right but sometimes it’s tough to be patient.
