 Hi, Just like to say “Hello”, so “Hello to all from The Lavender Hill Mob”. We’re from Canvey Island, Essex, UK

Three weeks ago I was introduced to geocaching by a work colleague, I couldn’t believe that this sort of thing was going on and caches were hidden literally under my nose!!

So using my Garmin Geko 201, which I used to use in my metal detecting days, my wife, daughter, dog and me went off to find our first cache…no luck…….then another cache…..again no luck…….after not finding our 5 nearest caches we were thinking that this was a mass wind up!

Then I had a brain wave…..the Geko’s position format was set up wrong……….. we were always 500 feet out……….we’d walked miles……………..DOH!

Since then we’ve had a great time, found 5 caches, one with a travel bug which I’m going to leave in Romania (I live in the UK but work in Romania).

So thank you to whoever started this sport, hobby, pastime, it's really good fun.

BTW. I think I need to upgrade from my Geko 201, anyone know where I can get a cheap

Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx?

Also, I’m thinking of buying the ViewRanger software for my Nokia N95 any comments would be appreciated.

Thanking you in advance

The Lavender Hill Mob.

Welcome to the forums! Love your nom de guerre--one of my favorite movies. It will be interesting to see what the remake is like.

You can get nearly all the functionality of a 60CSx in a Vista Hcx, for about $100 less. It's a brand new model, so there are no definitive reviews yet. But I'd recommend having a look at it.

The GPSMAP 60CSx has a new antenna that gets way better reception under trees and in canyons.

Yep Just in the Redwoods yesterday and where I had NO reception with my eTrex Vista I had 24 ft of accuracy and way back in the grove I had 34 ft of accuracy...Cant say much for the Cx, but I love my 60csx!

Welcome!!! I also had the same problem with my Gps when I changed the datum to decimal when I first got my cable for the Vista...I went on a long trip down south and all the coords were way off!!! I was searchin in a freshly disked fields and fencelines in the middle of nowhere!!!...NO COMMENTS DADFISH!!!

Actually, it's not the antenna, but the SIRF III chipset. I use a 60 CSx and swear by it. But the eTrex 'H' models also have a high-sensitivity chipset (not SIRF III, but rumored to be just as good), and they are about $100-$150 less expensive than my GPSr.

Yes. The 'x' indicates the unit has the SIRF III chipset. The 'S' indicates whether it has an electronic compass. I have a 60 CSx but only rarely use the compass, so if I did it again, I might save a few bucks and just get the Cx. But looooove the reception of the SIRF chipset - so far beyond my old eTrex Vista. All the other bells and whistles are nice, too.
