Garmin Vista HCx mini-review

Recommended Posts

i'm very impressed, macnerd! thanks for the prod to upload google earth (just another great piece of free software from the great god google). i'll be buying my very own HCX in the next couple of days. if you don't mind, i'd appreciate being able to email you directly to get a few more tips and info, specific to the Sandias and the primary reason why i'm buying this GPS. my email address is: luveggies@gmail.com.

No problem. Drop me a private message on here and I'll reply via email.

Anyone tried if there is a special test screen like many previous etrex?

Holding the click stick down and then powering up will enter the test screen on some of them.

More on this here.

Anyone to try this? Can we still read the temperature of the unit?

Yep, you can still get the temperature of the unit through the sequence you describe. Neat, never tried it before.

Garmin is aware of the freeze up problem as of 7/13. They had me ship my unit back on that day as they had not seen one in the shop, and immediately replaced mine with another that did not have this defect.

The WAAS problem existed on both.

There is a firmware update available thru the WebUpdater until Garmin decides to update their support/updates page or via the link below to version v2.30. There is no mention of it addressing the 'Power On' as well as for the WAAS reset issues.

Vista HCx v2.30

Change History

Version 2.20 to 2.30

1. Fixed Swiss grid issue.

2. Fixed postcode issue with CNE v.9 NT.

3. Added hint message when the E-compass of the unit has never been calibrated successfully by user.

4. Change "Lithium Ion" text to "Lithium"

Rhialto,

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

I'm not sure why the WAAS fix was not listed. I do apologize. I will pass this e-mail on to the appropriate department. If you should have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us. Thank you.

So,

I just updated to this version, wow that "hint" message is really annoying, it pops up over and over again as I cycle through the pages... is there any way to turn it off (other than turning on the magnetic compass)?

I strongly suggest you email Garmin and let them know how you feel about this "hint" feature. It's annoying and just plain silly to pop this message up constantly, over and over and over when you have the compass turned off. I leave my compass off until I need it and having this "hint" remind me to calibrate my compass (when I already knowingly switched it off for a reason) is really annoying. This should be a user-configurable option and I've emailed Garmin telling them this.

To answer your question...what I have done as a work-around to this is to remove the compass page from my page sequence so it no longer pops up while cycling through the pages. You'll still get the "hint" if you access the compass page though.

Wooohooooooooooooooooo! =D=D=D My baby has arrived! I have just picked the package up from the logistics company that had visited my house 12:20 local time. They had left a note so I called FedEx and asked if I could get it by my self today and they gave me the adress!

I havn't opened it yet, I am still at work with about 26 minutes and 22 second to go and then I will ride my bike like never before XD

I will return later if I havn't died of over excitement ^^

Congrats! The Vista HCx is a fantastic little unit. I'm sure you'll think so too...

Read through the messages here. There's information about quirks with the different unit software versions. If the WAAS bug in v2.20 doesn't bother you, I would stick with that version. The new v2.30 introduces a very annoying "hint" feature that you may want to avoid. Personally, I wish I'd stayed at v2.20. :anitongue:

Sorry if this is stealing the spotlight.. but I have a venture cx, just got it. is there a reason water doesnt show as BLUE!?!?!?! Instead its white?!!?

Check the map/marine settings. If it is set to marine colors, water will show white on my Vista. It may be the same for yours, too.

My HCX just showed up at work this morning. Been a long wait listening to you guys talk about playing with yours. I haven't been able to get anything done at work since it arrived. I am definately going to leave the firmware version I have on until they get the new bug worked out. I don't mind turning on teh waas occasionally but I would hate having that compass message everytime I page through.

I have one question though. I also have an older Garmin 12 Map. I can go through the pages in either direction but can't figure out how to go about that with this unit. Can it be done?

Is anyone having trouble with the Vista HCx v2.30 update file from the Garmin website here? When I download this file (I've tried multiple times for the past few days) the following dialog box opens up when I run it:

vistahcx.jpg

This only happens with the Vista update file and NOT with the Legend update file. If I change the filename extension from .exe to .zip, it turns out to be a valid zip file and all the files contained in the zip coincide with the Legend file byte for byte. I have already updated my Vista via WebUpdater so this is in no way an issue in that regard. I'm just wondering if others are seeing this too. I have already emailed Garmin tech support to notify them.

I'm gearing up to buy the hcx and I am a total newbie to owning a gps. I know I need to get a sd card, which I remember reading a couple miles back for a good deal. I also see that I need additional maps. I will be using this for geocaching and driving directions, What are your suggestions for map software?

Thank you Rhialto for verifying this. This file has been available for download from Garmin since when, Friday? And they still have the same file there for download as of today (Tuesday). I wonder how many people have downloaded and ran this, scratching their heads when this screen pops up. Well, maybe they'll fix it tomorrow...

After reading ALL of these comments I wanted to post some of my own.

First off, this thread is for “Garmin Vista HCx mini-review”. Some posts are about other models.

The "hint" feature is not a bug, it is telling you that you updated the software (or it is a new unit) and you need to calibrate the compass. Just follow the manual on page 28 and the hint will go away!

I also had the WAAS disable bug but I think it went away with the updated from Version 2.20 to 2.30.

I posted a review of the Vista HCx on my web site. Go to www.ksguy.com , click on Geocaching then click the link to see my review.

True...BUT, please try this yourself: turn off your compass and cycle through the pages or just hit the compass page. It pops up constantly if you have your compass turned off. I, for one leave my compass off until I need it. In the mean time, I don't need to be reminded to calibrate it every single time I access the compass page. One or two reminders is enough...after that, it's simply annoying. After all, I'm the one that turned off the compass in the first place. It may not be a "bug" but is sure is a big annoyance.

i just got my unit today, i absolutely love it, its like day and night between my Garmin Venture and this. i get signals five times as fast as i did with my venture and its accurate even in my house.

one weird thing though, even when i have like a 14 foot accuracy radius, my circle around my triangle is HUGE to the point it encompasses a range in the hundreds (around 300-400) whats up with that? are their multiple circle radius's and i just dont see the one for me because i have good accuracy or?

one question i have, on my old venture it use to show the accuracy of my position while i was looking at the map, does the hcx have this feature or am i just blind?

other then that this thing is absolutely solid.

yes i had the Waas issue, went away the second i updated it.

one thing i wonder, i keep my back light at 5% and everytime i turn it off i have to put it back on again, bug or just a battery saver feature?

oh and another thing, how many geocaches can i load into this thing? i got a 2gb card with this.

also i'm torn between which software to get, i like a balance of knowing most roads but being accurate in hiking and biking.

I figured that one out. After you power it back on, click the POWER key twice quickly, then click the ENTER/ROCKER key. Your backlighting should now be back to where you set it before the power off. I set mine at 50% and it never changes with those steps.

i just tried it, while its a quick way to get back to my light, it still doesn't work.

i turn the unit on, when it loads and i'm locating satellites i hit it twice and it brings up the light bulb thing, i set it to 10% then i hit down on the click stick, i then shut the unit off to see if it works, am i missing something?

I believe that's the accuracy circle for the basemap in the unit. Since the basemap is very inaccurate, your circle will be large. It should disappear when you upload some Mapsource maps.

ah i see, thank you i was wondering about that, i'm still wondering which one i should use though, i plan on mostly using this for camping/hiking and generally being out in the bush, but i've heard the topo software is quite inaccurate with the roads or doesn't even give any?

Hi All:

My First post... I got my unit Thursday after reading all the reviews here - I love it! I also loaded the 2008 Topo maps for the area where I went camping. The basemap has major streets, and some smaller streets. The Topo has many more streets, but not new ones. In particular, I went to Muller State Park in Colorado which was opened in 1991. The Topo showed one trail through the camp ground, but didn't even recognize that there was a camp ground or park, or any of the roads in it.

Also, You can view the maps online on the Garmin web site. I looked at the National Parks 24K topos. I was amazed at how little content they had. They cover a few parks in Colorado, then the rest of the state only has detail to 3miles. Much worse than the 100K that is included in the Entire US 2008 TOPO. And they charge the same price for each.

I am hoping that someday Garmin will allow us to download TOPO maps from other sources. I would love to be able to scan my maps, then display them on the screen.

Two notes on the HCx and Cx units.

I'm buying a second now, as I decided to take mine on the lake one fateful day.

The lanyard connection point is weak. While riding a jetski and navigating, the thin attachment point snapped, leaving the lanyard around my neck, and a series of ripples in the lake where my GPS was steadily making its way to the bottom.

I strongly recommend getting a neoprene float case, pelican bag/case, etc... if you plan to use it near deep water and possibly connect the lanyard through both the back screw point and lanyard attachment points.

As another good link:

They have the Vista HCx for $235.99, free shipping.

Saved me $100 between difference in local store purchase price and tax.

Well OK. Looks like the auto resetting of the WAAS is a problem we all have, but my on/off/on problem is just a screw up with my unit. So I'll try the "hard reset" suggestion, and if that doesn't help I guess it's off to Garmin.

Be sure & let us know if a hard reset fixes your power problem.

so it looks like this is the only MAJOR problem with the HCX? if so, do you think it would be okay to purchase the unit and just get the download for the patch when they fix the problem? i just don't want to buy a unit with a problem that will have me send the unit in to get fixed when i can just buy a fixed unit.

The power problem that 'captain454' is having may very well be isolated to his unit only. I have yet to hear of anyone else having the same problem but I'm just going by the info on these boards. If this problem were widespread, you'd definitely be hearing about it here. If the problem he's having is corrected by a hard-reset, then it would be a total non-issue.

Regardless of the problem 'captain454' is having with his unit, I would not hesitate to order an HCx if I did not already own one. That's just my opinion...

Edit: looks like while I was posting, the captain's problem was solved by the hard-reset.

I just got the HCX a few days ago. And while I am happy with it I also have the power/on/off problem. But mine is primarily being unable to poweroff. The unit locks up and emits a continuous tone. I have to take the battery out to stop it. But it'll start up okay. I'll try the hard-reset to see it it makes a difference, but it is a real pain right now. It was fine for a while.

I hate to beat a dead horse but the power on/off problem is NOT isolated. I have had it since I got my unit in late July and the "hard reset" did absolutely nothing. I have not tried the firmware update yet because I'm afraid of really messing it up! In addition, my son's friend got his at the same time that I did and he is also having the problem. I have seen this mentioned elsewhere in the forums so it is NOT isolated. I have contacted Garmin again by email so I'm waiting to hear what they have to say. This is my second attempt - the first resulted in them telling me to try the hard reset.

Anyone have this problem? Got my new Vista HCx a couple of weeks ago and it just died today. It won't see any satellites what so ever. The GPS software rev. somehow reverted to 0.00 and it won't load the GPS software. I have to send the unit back to Garmin for replacement. Just my luck. No GPSr for at least a week.

Hi!

Well I was looking in the Garmin site and I saw this for the GPSMAP 60CSx.

Changes made from version 2.60 to 2.70 (firmware) :

Fixed occasional problem where the GPS would report a software version of 0.0 and not track satellites.

It seems that this problem is not new. It already appends in other GPS model (??) with other chipset (??). Is curious / odd to me.

I'm waiting for a legend HCx and I'm affraid.

They always have.

Great! Care to elaborate? Or point to where I could find more information?

Thanks...

I think this was a somewhat snarky reply meaning that you can download the maps, but you cannot upload them to the Garmin unit. There have been a couple of long-running threads about making your own maps, it requires some time and patience, but you might want to give a look.

Edit to add: There are a couple of places selling Garmin formatted maps, but they are usually of a very limited area. Colorado and Mexico come to mind.

Great topic as my 3 year old Venture has been acting up lately and I'm considering moving up in the world. I've checked around on rates for the Vista HCx. These are the best rates I've seen so far (shipping to a 20817 zip code). Just wondering if anyone has seen better deals.

Offroute.com

$234.95 + $10 S&H = $244.95

TVNAV.com

$240 + $8.88 S&H = $248.88

Anchorexpress.com

$235.99 + $15.99 S&H = $251.98

Prestigecamera.com

$219.99 + $14.99 S&H = $234.98 (great price, but bad ratings on this "store" - sounds too risky)

Anything better than $244.95?

Okay as for my previous post. I think I may have isolated my power off problem with the microSD card I was using. When I pulled the card out of the device the power on/off problem disappeared. When I put it back in the problem re-appeared. So I just reformatted the card and reloaded my maps and so far the power on/off problem hasn't shown up again.

Thanks everyone! You guys have just made my day! I have finaly decided that the Vista HCx definetly is something for me =)

All I have to do now is find a store online in the US that ships international. You have no idea how lucky you are over there. Here in Sweden the Vista HCx has a price tag of the ordinary Vista Cx is between 500-600$ ;P

hello hedtjarn!

try this one:

HCX 299,- Euro

http://www.navifuture.de/product_info.php?...-Vista-HCx.html

15 Euro shipping to Sweden

http://www.navifuture.de/shop_content.php?coID=1

I bought my HCX there. A very nice guy and the shop is 100% OK.

(i bought already several times there)

It is not a US-price but the best you can get in EU.

Indeed, Martin Baum is a nice, English writing, guy :-) In the Netherlands the price difference (august 2007) for the Vista Hcx is at least 71 Euro comparing with 299 Euro. For bundled offers however the price difference is small. F.i.: FuturumShop in NL offers the Vista Hcx + Topo NL + 1GB Micro SD for 460 Euro (inclusive shipping costs). Extrapolated, the virtual price of the Vista is 225 Euro :-) (370- Topo/130 - SD/15). This difference is in my opinion too small (299 + 130 +15) for ordering a "Navifuture" eTrex (H series) which are besides international versions (Importgerät) with a world base map. The language can only set in English, Frence, Spanish and Portuguese.

I received my Vista HCx and its everything everyone is saying about it. Its Great!! However, when downloading waypoints from Geocaching.com, using EasyGPS, I cannot download waypoints from other states or further away points. My Venture Cx was always on Find Nearest and it found all waypoints. With the Vista HCx, it has to be in Find by Name. And when you use that, the keypad comes up and wants you to put in a name of the cache. Very annoying. Does anyone know of a fix or workaround for this? I don't mind finding by Name but the keypad coming up all the time is the problem.

I think you're missing one small detail here. When the 'find waypoints' dialog box comes up (in your case 'Find by Name'), press the Find button (bottom left button) and select 'Find Nearest'. That should take care of your problem.

When my listing of waypoints are showing by Name, if I switch to Find Nearest the waypoints that are long distance or from other states disappear. If I click on Find by Name they come back along with the keypad. Never had to do this with my Venture Cx. Maybe Garmin will know??

If you press the "Quit" key the keypad goes away and the waypoints are ordered by name.
