Loading Mapsource into a Vista CX - Frustrating!

OK - being new to the GPS scene, I bought a Garmin etrex Vista CX and the Mapsource topographic Software version 3.02 with Trip & Waypoint Manager. Had a great time this weekend finding caches in and around Cripple Creek CO. but want to use the topo software too since I have it already. I had no problem getting the software onto the computer, but after installing just the Western U.S. disc and attempting to transfer the software, the Mapsource interface for USB indicates there is no GPS attached. I can easily confirm the presence of the GPS when I open "My Computer" and note the 64 MB of ram present.

Is this somehow related to unlocking the software? The manual for the software tells me to look for a picture/symbol of a padlock on the outside of the software if this is a necessary step, but I can find no such marking anywhere. There is a Serial Number on both the Topo Software as well as the Trip & Waypoint disc. Do I need to use the "Unlocking "utility and enter those SNs to make it all work??

I should look for the latest Garmin USB drivers on the support site for your Vista Cx model.

You also need to update the Mapsource software as I believe that is an old version which came out prior to your model being designed.

 

Go to garmin's website and update to the latest "Mapsource" software.

The Topo USA software is not locked, but as Red says, go get a MapSource version published in this Millennium. MapSource upgrades are free from Garmin. Then you should be good to go.
