I used to do it all the time as a kid. Quote
Mushtang Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 My number one favorite thing is being in on a secret, and going to find something that many people may pass by all day long without realizing it, and I'm on a mission to retrieve it. For me it's all about the recovery of the cache, and the signing of the log. A guardrail cache or LPC found while walking from my hotel on a business trip brings the same sized smile on my face as an ammo can with moss glued all over it that I find near a trail in a park. Luckless Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 Exploring, that's it for me. I'm a snoop and I always want to know what's over there. Geocaching takes me to some neat places to explore. (only one lamp post cache around here and it's a premium) Quote

mtbikernate Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 I like the challenge of the hunt, but also very high on the list is going places other folks don't get to see. Quote
+the hermit crabs Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 I do like all the stuff that has been mentioned so far -- the discovery of new places, the feeling of victory after a successful search, the exercise -- but I can't say that any one of those is my favorite. Mostly because letterboxing has all that stuff, and letterboxing just doesn't do it for me. So I'd have to say that my favorite thing about caching is the most significant thing that separates it from letterboxing (aside from the GPS, that is): the logging. Writing cache logs, and reading other people's logs, are a big part of what keeps me very interested in caching. Quote
+Snoogans Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 What is your favorite thing about geocaching? Without a doubt or a second thought my answer is GEOCACHERS! I mean, that covers ALLLLL the bases. Quote
+HaLiJuSaPa Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 (edited) What is your favorite thing about geocaching? I have to say, for me, it is that it introduces me to wonderful outdoor areas that I never knew existed! Definitely that for us (though the occasional micro fix that boosts the numbers when there's no time to do a regular cache or the weather is not agreeable is nice too! Though we're far from being "numbers obsessed" )! We try to do hides that provide the same for others (in terms of "hidden gem" outdoor areas)! Edited July 8, 2007 by HaLiJuSaPa Quote
+5 Golden Rings Posted July 8, 2007 Author Posted July 8, 2007 My number one favorite thing is being in on a secret, and going to find something that many people may pass by all day long without realizing it, and I'm on a mission to retrieve it. Isnt it amazing? This is one of the reasons that I also enjoy urban caches. They may be in an area where there is no new area to explore but the thrill of searching without "getting caught" is exhilirating. Depending on the time of the day, these caches can be either the easiest find or the most difficult! Quote
+sunriseoverwater Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 I love that geocaching gives me a reason to go see places I might never have seen otherwise. Most of the new spots I've discovered while geocaching have been really neat, and I'm glad that people hide caches in these places so that the rest of us can enjoy them too. Quote
+DammitNanet Posted July 8, 2007 Posted July 8, 2007 I love that it adds another dimension to hiking. I generally hike between 15-20 miles per week, and now that I'm caching I've found new trails to hike instead of hiking the same old local trails. Quote
+bklee Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 I'm continually surprised by the number and quality of parks around me I knew nothing about until I started caching. Quote
+CrkrJim Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 +1 on new places. I lived here for over 30 years and still haven't seen it all. Quote
+bwmick Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 For me getting the cache while fun is secondary. (try to tell me that while I am hunting for it and see what I say) the primary joy for me is getting there, not just the hike but the whole process of getting to the cache. from planning the trip (I live in Northern Ontario and all caches are a trip) so the planning of the route, to the ride there. (I ride a motorcycle when i cache as often as I can) the pleasure of a new road is as good as it gets. Quote
+dew cache Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 The whole experience! I love adventure type of games on the computer where you don't know what lies ahead and finding things the same as caching. I also need the excerise helps keep my weight down and helps with my diabetes it also makes my doctor and wife happy. I am going to try to start caching while riding my bike at 60 I don't know if I can or not. It also takes me to neat places I probably would never go. Quote
+admo1972 Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 I love the feeling when getting to GZ and thinking, "there is nothing here", then, with a quick glance around, saying out loud, "oh, there it is". Quote
+Renegade Knight Posted July 9, 2007 Posted July 9, 2007 It has to be the people. Why here in the forums the camaraderie is so thick you could almost cut it with a knife. Quote

+Mad Fiddler Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 I'm continually surprised by the number and quality of parks around me I knew nothing about until I started caching. Same here. I had no idea that there were places here where I could feel alone in the country only twenty minutes from the city. A big thank-you to those who place caches in such interesting locations. Quote
+frex3wv Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 for me - it has made for some very memorable times so far - especially with friends and family. That is why I write descriptively when i log - so I can go back later and remember my adventures (and I figure the cache owner likes to hear the stories - though I could be wrong I guess). Quote
+Team LaLonde Posted July 11, 2007 Posted July 11, 2007 One of the greatest things about geocaching is reading a well-written log on one your caches. It really makes me feel good to know someone had a good time on that four-mile hike and they appreciated the scenery. Thom Quote
+2Wheel'in Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 Good reasons one and all...and I especially agree with Snoogan's - it's the people, Geocachers are just plain good folks! Bill Quote
+Sioneva Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 Days like this are why I love geocaching. From my newest cache hide: July 11 by Sioneva (410 found) Sean must have arrived just after I left. I went out after work at 5:00 to put the logbook in place, ended up hanging out on the (Missouri River) shore drinking a beer and chatting with a nice couple from Papillon (Carleen and Jim) who were doing catch and release near the cache site. They saw the FTF come and go, were full of questions, and the beer was great. Ended up leaving about 7:00. You never know what will happen when you go geocaching. Quote
+jwe4i Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 i enjoy the hunt, being outdoors, the peace and quite, the satisfaction of finding the hide, and the game going on right in front of people without them knowing!!!! Quote
+Tacodoctor Posted July 12, 2007 Posted July 12, 2007 I am very new to this but I love the hunt, exploring areas I never knew of before and most of all the excitement on my kids' faces when we find the cache. That is priceless and it creates great memories for them. I also enjoyed the fact that on our first cache we met fellow cachers at the point of interest which made me sense there is a bit of comaraderie in this sport. Quote

I used to do it all the time as a kid. My lovely and very intellegent wife says that we enjoy geocaching because it let's us act like kids playing in the woods all over again! She's so right! In fact two summers ago I even found one in the woods I played in as a child. Edited July 12, 2007 by wimseyguy Quote
+imajeep Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 A combination of a nice place where we haven't been before, and an interesting hide. We don't care much about numbers or FTFs. Hats off to those who do, though! Quote
