+trumpettruck
I was wondering if there are any caches out there that people consider essential finds for their geocaching career. Obviously, the original geocache location in Oregon is a must-see... but I was curious if there are any other places that are very important in the history of Geocaching. Quote Link to comment
+9Key
The Mingo cache in Kansas is the oldest existing cache - that would be one for me. Quote Link to comment
+StarBrand
The Mingo cache in Kansas is the oldest existing cache - that would be one for me. For me as well - some weekend I need to schedule a quick trip down to catch that one. Quote Link to comment
+sbell111
I guess if your going to Mecca, you may as well do this cache. Quote Link to comment
+Kit Fox
I wouldn't use the term "mecca" to describe any aspect of geocaching. I think the last Project Ape caches would be worth finding. Quote Link to comment
CacheNCarryMA
I guess if your going to Mecca, you may as well do this cache. The last log (June 13, 2006) indicates that it is a buried cache. Quote Link to comment
CacheNCarryMA
I would say Original cache, APE cache, and Groundspeak HQ. Other legendary caches include TUBE TORCHER (not to be confused with Torch Tuber), Blood & Guts in Virginia (aka Iron & Stone). I don't know how many cachers have made special pilgrimages just to tackle those caches, but certainly people (myself included) have for the first three mentioned. Some have suggested turning all that sand to glass so it won't blow around. I feel that that would be too extreme, however. Quote Link to comment
+TrailGators
This one is very close to Mecca. Quote Link to comment
+Mule Ears
Maybe it's just all the forum publicity, but I'd be tempted to travel in order to try my hand at Criminal's French Peak, or Vinny & Sue Team's Psycho Urban Cache #13 - Impossible! Give Up Now! Since I have no clue as to how to ascend the pillar, I guess French Peak is the more feasible goal. Though I hear the woods of the PacNorWest are infested with Sasquatches and carnivorous ferns. My desert training may be inadequate, so a few more viewings of Rambo may be in order. I'd make a Geo-Hajj to either of these Meccas and participate eagerly in the Stoning of the Lame Urban Micro, a ritual of purification and rededication to the Geo-faith. Quote Link to comment
CacheNCarryMA
I thought of French Peak when I posted, but I don't think enough people have visited it to be considered a "mecca". "Geo-Hajj" is not to be confused with "GeoJihad" Edited June 28, 2007 by CacheNCarryMA Quote Link to comment

I'm surprised you didn't consider this cache, closer to home Anasazi Ruins Quote Link to comment
+Mule Ears
I'm surprised you didn't consider this cache, closer to home Anasazi Ruins That's an excellent candidate (as are some in your neck of the woods!) but it's close enough not to be a true pilgrimage for me. Splitting hairs on my part... Quote Link to comment
+Boot Group
Yes! Great Question. This cache is by far the best cache I've ever found. Take the trip to the Big Easy. It'll be worth it! View Carre Cache Quote Link to comment
+flask
I wouldn't use the term "mecca" to describe any aspect of geocaching. why not? -- i made a pilgrimage to the MD APE cache. it was awesome. Quote Link to comment
+wildchld97
Blue Summit A friend of mine just came back from Jamaica and he said that this cache, (even thought it's only a virtual and not an original "mecca") is not to be missed. It's well worth the experience. I'll be back "home" in December so that's the first place I'm heading. Quote Link to comment
+chaosmanor
Using "mecca" in the sense of a place where everyone must go once in their life, I'd like to nominate the Frog Shrine, in Santa Barbara. Lots of finds, not too hard to get to, interesting customs involved. Quote Link to comment

Considering that I'm not a big fan of the "religion of peace" might be part of the reason. How about a better term like Legendary caches rather than "islamic holy land" caches. Mule Ears, If you ever come out this way, consider my 100th placed cache Operation Wreckhunter. Quote Link to comment
vagabond
Speaking of Mecca you could also do this cache a lot closer then the other Mecca Quote Link to comment

+Too Tall John
Still don't really know the significance of this location, but here. It is the location you are taken to when you click on the tiny box on any cache page that is hidden by a map if you are signed in. (See this thread.) It isn't a zip code center, but I've been told it holds some sort of significance, but I can't be told what it is... Edited June 29, 2007 by Too Tall John Quote Link to comment
