Garmin Cartography

Does anybody know how to make maps to import into Mapsource? I'm currently working on a mapset of local bicycle trails that I would like to have as a basemap. I don't think to mapping community is that large, but if anyone has any thoughts of ideas I'd like to hear.

Getting your custom map to load into Mapsource involves setting data in your map and hacking the registry. Note that is is not necesary to the get the map into Mapsource in order to upload it to your GPSr.

I made a simple basemap of Vermont for a cartography lab last fall, and I tried porting it into Mapsource. I have the option of selecting the map like it's a Garmin map, but it doesn't display anything, it's just a white rectangle.

I will check out this tutorial linked above. :-D

Does your map upload ok to the gps with mapsource or sendmap20? Any chance you will put your work up for download?

Yeah, if I ever got anything that's good and productive, I'd love to post it and get feedback. I was thinking about making a place where members could send me trail tracks from when they go on foot trails - just to send a track of the trail and I could slowly try to compile trails. I wish there were good maps of Bicycle trails, but that's something I'm sure I have to make. Does Garmin Topo maps have trails on them for state parks?

Unless you would rather sit at your computer and make maps rather than ride, I recommend purchasing one of the mapsource topo products and upload your own tracks and tracks found on the internet.

There are a lot of mountain biking sites out there that provide maps and gpx files: http://www.google.com/search?q=mountain+bi...amp;startPage=1

Stay away from http://trailsource.com

I believe making your own maps is an advanced task and a daunting one if you are unaccustomed to gps and mapping in general.

ADD PATH tool in google earth, save as KML. import into freeware gpsvisualizer.com to add elevation data and export as .gpx file.

You may also consider working with OpenStreetMap (www.openstreetmap.org), too, to share your work with a larger audience, and as part of a larger project. There is a program to convert OpenStreetMap data to Garmin map format. (Not currently routable; I'm planning on creating a routable version).
