Political Caching

Recommended Posts

A cache placer here in Arizona places caches with a very specific political message regarding illegal immigration. I'm wondering what the ettiquette is regarding it. I was going to add this to my Found It log, but decided not to just because I have a tendency to speak quickly and think slowly at times. Since I'm new and don't know the ettiquette I thought it was a better thing to bring up here than in a Found It log.

"BTW, the political agenda of the caches in the area are a bit of a turn off. Not that I disagree or agree with the message, just that they are political in nature. It's like when my favorite band talks political at concerts. I just wanna say "just play the songs. I'm here for fun, not to take part in a one-way political discussion". I'm not about to tell anyone what they can or can not put in or on their caches so do as you please. Guess I'm just trying to add a second opinion thats all.

Thanks again."

From the Cache Listing Requirements/Guidelines:

Caches that Solicit

Solicitations are off-limits. For example, caches perceived to be posted for religious, political, charitable or social agendas are not permitted. Geocaching is supposed to be a light, fun activity, not a platform for an agenda.

Thanks for the rule clarification, however, these caches seem not to be posted "for" a political agenda, but "voice" a political agenda after having been posted.

Did you find the cache? Did you sign the log? If so then there is no shame in claiming the find.

Claiming the find does not necessarily mean that you enjoyed or approved of the cache itself, rather that you just found it.

The only time I would not claim the find is when you go out looking for a cache with the intent of encouraging its demise (due to content, placement, whatever).

Don't over analyze claiming the find, after all it supposed to be about the smiley you get on your face and not the little electronic one.

BTW, there is no mention of anything political in the webpage for the cache. It's only in/on the cache itself once you find it.

So all this hinting around and refusal to identify the cache(s) in question boils down to political pamphlets in the cache?

Um, don't read them if they offend you!

It's just a cache... sign the log and move on... doing so in no way supports the cause promoted by the pamphlets.

I think that is a valid question: is it proper to place political info in a cache, whether it is for or against a group?

What about religious tracts?

Personally I don't give a rip one way or the other. If it's crammed full of crap that I don't want to read...I just sign the log and move on. The object of the game is to FIND the cache. There's nothing that says that you have to look at (or agree with) the contents.

We have one here W.W.J.C. that clearly states what it is. The cache owner tells you up front that if you're going to turn into a fiery pile of dust by handling religious literature...don't bother hunting it.

It's actually one of the more fun caches in the park because it's hidden very creatively.

As long as there is nothing illegal in the cache I have no problem with it. The Geocaching guidelines ban items that are already made illegal by most state laws (unattended guns, alcohol, and porn) or items that threaten the longevity of a cache (food and scented items).

I will talk to people about the taboo subjects of politics and religion and I've noticed something. Now this is in no way a scientific study. It is simply my personal observation and YMMV. I've noticed that when I talk to people who are confident in their political choice and/or choice of religion there is nothing I can do to sway them away from their convictions (assuming that I would want to do something like that) during a short conversation and I highly suspect that a little pamphlet wouldn't have any greater success. I've also found that I learn more from those who are comfortable with their convictions because they speak frankly about the subjects without try to silence anyone else. On the other hand I've found that when talking to someone who isn't confident about their opinions and are having doubts and/or questions of their own tend to range from simply not wanting to talk about to wanting to ban all talk about the subject. Instead if allowing others to have their opinions they want everyone to have no opinion or at the least not to express their opinion. I suspect those who want to ban all political and religious objects from caches are simply uncomfortable with the subjects. I don't think that a discomfort of a subject or idea is a good reason to ban certain items from a cache.

I hear ya.

Sometimes I just want to say, "shut up and sing".

Anyway, some people don't have a clue as to proper time and place. It's called discretion: knowing when and where. But since this is a free country we're allowed a lot of leeway. You mention etiquette. Somepeople can't leave rhetoric out of their lives long enough to have fun.

The guidelines say that soliciting through geocaches is off limits.

What you place in a cache initially or what your "theme" is will quickly become a geocache full of McToy's, soggy signature cards or postcards or other various junk drawer cast offs.

My point is, don't worry, the swag will turnover quickly regardless of the theme of the geocache. Now if the geocache has blatant racism printed on the container, then thats another story altogether.

The cache itself can't have a blatant agenda of Politics, Business, or Religion. I supposed they could have a blatant agenda about the beauty of the area and such things.

Trade items can have an agenda. They are often signature items and reflect the persons personality who left the items. You can't do much more than trash them if they are soggy, take one as a keepsake if you collect signature items etc. There are more agendas than there people. Even the anti agenda stand is an agenda. Chalk it up to the simple fact that it takes all kinds to fill this world. Including the kind who rub you wrong.

I was thinking the same thing.

Each to their own I suppose, however, I dont like finding anything, but fun trinkets, TB's and Coins in a cache. I dont like Religious and/or Political Propaganda in any way shape or form. It does not bug me that much really, I just try look over them and enjoy the outdoors and the hunt.

Its not blatant racism and its written on the cache itself. The caches are micros (film canisters, etc) so there arent really any swag in them.

The phrase on the cache itself is blatantly backing a political agenda. They are micros so there is no room for trade items.

And I feel I should reiterate that it is not the political agenda supported by the cache that rubs me wrong. It is the idea that there is a political statement even on the cache wether I agree or not. And anyway, I had a great time caching so I would hardly say I was rubbed wrong.

The political stuff is not in the cache. It is written on the cache. And as I said, it looks more like "these caches seem not to be posted "for" a political agenda, but "voice" a political agenda after having been posted."

In fact now that i think about it, if anything, I would rather the cache be built around the message just so before hand I know that I will be subjected to a one-way political "discussion" while visiting the cache.

Its not tradable swag in the cache it is writing on the cache. BTW, is your last name really Barstool? If so that is awesome! I figure it's prolly a nickname though.

Since the offending language is written on the cache there is no chance for CITO. If there were pamphlets, you have to make a personal choice because one man's treasure is another man's trash. So long as the info is not illegal, I'd leave it but since I'm not a lawyer (IANAL) I might occasionally make a mistake...

Bono, the lead singer of the band U2, is famous throughout the entertainment industry for being more than just a little self-righteous.

At a recent U2 concert in Glasgow, Scotland, he asked the audience for total quiet.

Then, in the silence, he started to slowly clap his hands, once every few seconds.

Holding the audience in total silence, he said into the microphone, "Every time I clap my hands, a child in Africa dies."

A voice with a broad Scottish accent, from the front of the crowd, pierces the quiet

"Well, foockin stop doin it then!"

I too hate when bands pull that crap. I paid good money to come and be entertained and DGAF about your political views. I'm not here for a political discussion. Saw Roger Waters for the 3rd time last summer. Though his music always has some political statements and undertones, which is fine in and of itself, but I was thoroughly put off by his blatant anti-Iraq statements and such. Not to mention a Brit telling me to vote Democrat. Enough so that i'm not the least bit disappointed about not getting to see his show this summer.

Same theory with caching. I'm there to see the area and finds the cache. Please don't use it to ambush me with your political, religious or other views. Wether I agree with you or not, I really don't give a dadgum right now, I'm just out geocaching and trying to get AWAY from this crap for a couple hours.

Caches are not allowed to have an agenda because it might offend someone. As we know by these threads there's not much that doesn't offend someone out there. I was just a little surprised that someone pointing the finger at people that are constantly breaking the law would be offensive. I guess maybe it would offend the anarchists...

Eh, it's more the forum in which they choose to voice their opinion. A time and a place and all that.

Yea, I guess but this particular one is on the fence. Of course, I could say that people are free to choose which caches they find, but I guess that oft used argument only works if the cache is lame...

If you frown on it, then you are may be classicly uncomfortable but you are moved to action. As for a one way discussion. That's an opinion. You are not forced to consider it at all. Life is full of these one way presentations of opinion. In a recent beer commecial I noticed that whatever the beer is it seems to imply that it's best served in rooms full of women who are only visible from the waist down who are great at shaking their behinds. I swear there is an opinion in that commercial but I'm still not sure what it is.
