I Want a Load of My Geocaching Stats.

Recommended Posts

Is the only way to get stats for myself to get a premium membership? I downloaded CacheStats but it said I had to do something that only premium members can do. I have no problem paying the $30 I'm just wondering if satisfying my obsesive compulsiveness is worth $30 or if I should just deal with no stats. All the other goodies are of no interest to me. My GPS won't even download coordinates. Is there a backdoor way to get stats?

Spending the $30 will solve all your problems and make your geocaching life complete (until next year).

For the CacheStats page I think you can download each loc file for the caches you have found and combine them using GSAK. Then you will have a file you can upload to CacheStats.

I'm not sure about this as I haven't tried it but it might be an option. Give it a try and see if it works. Then let us know.

Is it worth $3? You could go premium for one month for $3, get the MyFinds PQ, and use the stats pages that way.

You can also get other PQs during that month - be be careful doing that....

1st, you'll realize how awesome PQs are and will end up spending the $30 a year anyway.

2nd, you'll decide you need to buy a new GPS that can download coordinates so you can fill it with the 500 (or 1,000) closest unfound caches.

3rd, you'll go buy a PDA so you can download the cache pages for all of those caches and carry them with you at all times.

This stats quest could end up costing you quite a lot. :D

Let's see:

$30.00 Premium Membership

That leads to pocket query addiction and the need for a program to manage all that data. B)

$25.00 to register GSAK (Geocaching Swiss Army Knife)

Then, after finding out the information can be sent to a PDA, you make a visit to eBay to look for inexpensive PDAs.

$30.00 for a Palm M500

But, you need a hard case for that so it doesn't break the first time you drop it while caching, so back to eBay . . .

$15.00 for a hard case

Then, you need a good, easy-to-use program for the Palm. :D

$8.00 for Cachemate

Then, after you see how deep the addiction goes, you might go the way a friend of mine did and spend a little more.

$16,000.00 for a 4WD vehicle . . . :DB):D

i'm sorry, but i'm a little toasted that you want to find a backdoor. i paid my $30 for the simple desire to have paid my share to help support a site i use and derive so much pleasure from. i did not at the time understand or care for PQs. all the other goodies are worth little to me.

the difference between us? i have a desire to carry my own weight, i guess.

don't nobody write in to tell me how poor you are, either. i'm not interested. right now i'm facing the possiblity that i may lose the job i have held for twenty years. it is unlikely that i will get another. i may lose my house. i eat a lot of cold cereal these days.

i'm STILL glad i paid. and next december if i have to give up some groceries to renew, i will. i hope it doesn't come to that, but i will.

No, but really you forgot the jump from the initial GPS12 up to the GPSMap 60CSx after seeing thats what all the other :):) cool cahers are sporting, not to mention the assorted carriers and holders, depending on the car I am driving or if the "GEOMobile" is in use.

But after all is said and done the hunt is priceless!

So for the OP, sure go for the $3 fee, you won't regret it! :)

Thanks Miragee

My wife thought geocaching was cheap and harmless when she purchsed a GPSr for me last Father's Day. I'm just waiting for my Ford Escort to die so I can justify something a little more effective on the trails. I've tried to kill my E-trex Legend so that I could justify an upgrade, but the darn thing just bounces off rocks. Thousands of dollars on gas, diet Mountain Dew, and Little Debbie snack cakes. :) Hundreds of dollars on clothing, boots, packs, and other equipment. I have eight flashlights in my caching bag that goes almost everywhere I go. :)

The $3.00 monthly fee is well worth the price and is just a drop in the bucket. You'll be glad you tried it and you will not want to give up the members only features once you've had a chance to play with them.

Groundspeak is far too generous and $30 a year is a steal for what you get.

You my friend have a terrible addiction. ALL my cash flow goes towards the comfort and well being of my family...After they are taken care of,then and only then do I spend on the Hobbies I enjoy.

I appreciate that you support a website that brings you such fun...But some folks out there have different priorities.

Im a cancer patient supporting a family, between medical bills, lost wages,on top of regular bills Im lucky to have 10 extra dollars this year.

I appreciate Geocaching.com for the free membership and will at some point go to a premium membership,But only after I meet the needs of my household.

i live alone. if i can squeeze out my membership by cutting back on groceries that month, i'll do it.

so far my hospital bills are paid, although my medications are expensive. for the time being (provided i don't lose my job) i have good insurance.

don't tell me what kind of addiction i have.

and

Is there a backdoor way to get stats?

Not: How do you place your priorities in life? Is geocaching at the top, bottom, or somewhere inbetween.

Translation: Keep It On Topic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you stepshep. :o

Job? You have one? Twenty years? Some people can't work due to disabilities.

House? You have one? Some poeple can't afford one.

Im so glad you aren't interested. :o

i didn't mean to imply that the problems of the unemployed and homeless aren't important. i didn't expect those folks to be crying about how much they can't afford a membership.

and it is very possible that i may become unemployed and homeless due to disability. soon. as in next month.

it's really swell that you're glad, 'coz otherwise i might suggest that sarcasm is rarely the kind and gentle way that you prescribe.

So is there an answer? We have multiple memberships for family members but only one paid membership. Is there a way to do this, manually or otherwise?

If you maintain a GSAK database with just your finds, populated with .gpx files that you download from each cache page (not .loc files), then yes you can do this. (I'm assuming that non-premium members can download individual .gpx files from the cache page, but I don't know this for sure). Using GSAK, export to gpx file format from the file/export menu. On the export form, make sure you tell it to limit the number of logs to export to 0 and also check the box that says always include my logs. This is a little counter-intuitive, but it will create a gpx file that contains your log entries only, a requirement of CacheStats.

Right. but if you download a bunch of locs and sort it out in GSAK (or other program), you can export it as a gpx file. However since loc don't have all the data of gpx, it would be interesting to see if such a file would be useful in 'cachestats' or whatever program.

I'm not intimidated. I like when people post in my threads no matter what they say. Like when Dale Earnhardt said "I don't care if they're cheerin' or booin' as long as they're making noise."

The EXTINGUISHER I was thinking of bringing out the Engine and laying a supply line and letting go with the deck gun as no mere extinguisher can put this thread out. :drama:

Now to the on topic stuff. I pay my $3 a month for premium membership and use GSAK and Findstatgen. Once GSAK is loaded you can just keep it up todate and it works.

Just need to get the PQ's to load it up and then load all the new ones.

I hope this helps

Now where did I put that Fire Engine?
