greg1701 Posted June 9, 2007 Posted June 9, 2007 Hi all. Thought I'd throw my 30 bucks in to help support this fine site... as I don't have a GPS Unit that hooks up with a computer (Explorist 300) I thought I'd ask the members who have been here longer.. What other benefits do you use with your membership? The maps seem to be the same to me before I joined and now after... Can't really use the "Cache along a Route" feature either... So what do you folks do with this "enhanced" ability... and also, how do you "delete" caches from showing up in your search parameters... Thanks all.. Greg denvertvguy.com [8D]
Miragee Posted June 9, 2007 Posted June 9, 2007 You can create Pocket Queries. Even if you cannot connect to your GPSr, you could use a program like GSAK (Geocaching Swiss Army Knife) to have a lot of data on your computer. You can create different databases in GSAK for your Found caches, or caches outside your usually searching area. When you get Pocket Queries, they will only contain the caches with the parameters you set. After you have logged a "Found It" on a cache, it will not come into your PQ for the caches you have "Not Found." If you have a PDA, you can use GSAK to Export all the cache data for whatever program you use on your PDA, such as Cachemate.
Tweedledum & Tweedledee Posted June 9, 2007 Posted June 9, 2007 To have cache not show on your search results all you do is add them to your ignore list. This can be done by selecting "ignore listing" on the right hand side of the cache that you want to ignore. As for features that you can now take advantage of I'm not too sure what to tell you. Most of the features a best used when you have the ability to send the data strait to a GPSr device. An example of this would be the pocket queries; they can be used even if you can't send the data to GPSr or PDA, but are most useful for that purpose.

So what do you folks do with this "enhanced" ability... and also, how do you "delete" caches from showing up in your search parameters... To prevent caches from showing up, add them to your 'ignore' list. You should see an 'Ignore this cache' link on each cache description page. I sprang for a premium membership to get pocket queries and caches along a route. Both can be useful, even if your GPSr doesn't connect to your computer: Pocket queries can be loaded into software (like GSAK) to create a portable database on a laptop. You can take that out in the field to select caches you want to do. Caches along a route are incredibly useful, even if without a cable hookup. If I'm driving from Chicago to St. Louis, I can get a list of all caches along I-55 between the two cities. I can open the results in Google Earth and see which ones are near rest stops or right next to an easy exit, and so on. And you know you'll give in and buy that nice, shiny, new Magellan, or Garmin, or whatever, sooner or later. and when you do, you have a built in excuse: "But honey, I couldn't let the money I spent on my Geocaching.com membership go to waste, could I?"
greg1701 Posted June 10, 2007 Author Posted June 10, 2007 thanks for all the info.. guess i need a new GPS.. until then, how does one post photos into their own "gallery" in their profile? thanks! Greg www.denvertvguy.com
Miragee Posted June 11, 2007 Posted June 11, 2007 To get pictures into your Gallery, you have to upload the pictures to the log for either a cache you have found, or a TB you logged.
DatamanLV Posted June 11, 2007 Posted June 11, 2007 Just thought I would add some thoughts of Premium Members Feature Suggestions: 1) Ability to enter and download custom waypoints, ie: Home, Work, School. These waypoints could then be used from the search window as a location pulldown. 2) On search page, allow increasing the number of items listed on result page. I like to download those as waypoint files, and to do 100, have to download 5 times. And input box like Display X Items would work great.
Miragee Posted June 11, 2007 Posted June 11, 2007 With Pocket Queries you can do exactly what you are suggesting in #1. From the search page you don't get the .gpx files, only the .loc files, so you don't really want that option when you are a Premium Member.
wimseyguy Posted June 11, 2007 Posted June 11, 2007 Don't know why you cannot use the Caches along a Route feature? Unless you aren't the traveling type. It will still let you see where they are, you just won't be able to download to your unit. But for me, the pocket queries are the biggest benefit.
PedroKV Posted June 11, 2007 Posted June 11, 2007 What other benefits do you use with your membership? The maps seem to be the same to me before I joined and now after... [8D] Hi, I (I'm PM) use only PQ. In cooperation with registered GSAK. With this 2 things I can generate usable map for myself and also store one big .gpx file into my PDA. In Czech Republic we had very nice cachemap, but Groundspeak said no and we are without map. Now, after discussion with Groundspeak we will have map again, after changes on gc.com Also PM brings me possibility of new cache notification. So sometimes I can be first..
greg1701 Posted June 12, 2007 Author Posted June 12, 2007 What other benefits do you use with your membership? The maps seem to be the same to me before I joined and now after... --I wrote that a few days ago.. I now see on the Premium membership page this paragraph.. Geocaching Maps When logged in you can pan, zoom and identify caches from any point on the planet. It's an easy way to visualize all the local caches and quickly pinpoint the area of interest. Geocaches you have found are listed with checkboxes, and caches will have a travel bug icon if one has been placed in the cache. The map feature seems the same to me whether or not i'm logged in or not, and the caches don't have a checkbox, they have a smiley face and the travel bug doesn't show up on the wide map interface.. am I doing something wrong? thanks for all the info guys (and gals) Greg www.denvertvguy.com
