7Crooks Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 Is there a GPSr that is able to download and display the GPX files? Am I asking to much to be able to do paperless cacheing with only the GPSr? Right now, I am using a Palm to see the details of the cache and the GPXr to see the coordinates. I am wondering if a unit has been invented that can load and view the enire file (including things like the cache description and hints). Quote
embra Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 Many GPS handhelds can take gpx files that have been *converted* to their native formats, but descriptions and hints are the weak spots in the information transfer. Magelan Explorists, for example (with which I am most familiar), will display hints of up to 50 characters--but hints, as you know, often run longer. And I don't think any of them really try to tackle descriptions, which can be *very* long. So, although you can get a lot in the newer handheld units, I've found that it's still good to pack along the PDA. Quote
imajeep Posted June 7, 2007 Posted June 7, 2007 Garmin MapSource can open GPX files and download data to Garmin handhelds, but the only data that gets transferred is waypoints, routes, and tracks. About the only additional info that gets transferred with a cache are its name and ID. Quote
rlridgeway Posted June 8, 2007 Posted June 8, 2007 A pocket PC GPS software called Backcountry Navigator gets the cache on a map plus the description plus the hint. There are a lot of pluses with Backcountry Navigator. Quote
7Crooks Posted June 9, 2007 Author Posted June 9, 2007 My biggest problem is the fact that I only go caching about once every couple months. About the time I get a system down to DL all the wayoints to the GPSr and the descriptions to the PDA, I am so frustrated that It's virtually no fun. *one of the biggest problems is the fact that my Magellan Sporttraker uses a serial port cord ---which seems to work great sometimes but is unsolvable other times* The next thing is that I don't use my PDA for anything other than chachin' So, I've casually began looking for a newer GPSr, hoping for something that communicates well with the computer. Other bells and whistles are GREAT, but second to the communication factor. Thank you guys. Quote
