Garmin and the new download feature

Recommended Posts

I am looking to upgrade to a GPS that I can download off the internet to. Since I am not too smart with computers, the new feature that will down load waypoints to Garmin GPS is good for me. When I travel I can borrow a computer and dont mind downloading one at a time, Whats a good Garmin for this purpose. Thanks in advance

Any current model Garmin GPS should work with the feature except maybe some auto specific models.

Right, at least any model with the ability to cable it to the PC.

Off the top of my head, the Forerunner 101 and Geko 101 (if they are even made anymore) do not have cable interfaces.

Any of the new eTrex models would be good. But to download directly to your Garmin GPS, you have to download and install an application, which I suspect you may find a hassle. Plus, some users have found the software to be frustrating. See other posts on this board.

I'd suggest the new eTrex 'H' models (arriving in July), along with a free program called EasyGPS. Here is how it works: You download waypoints from GC.com to your computer. They download as .loc files. EasyGPS opens this type of file and can transfer the waypoints in them to your GPS unit. Most folks get the hang of it pretty quickly.

Use this feature at Go Geocaching on Garmin's website which allows you to search for caches using a GoogleMaps interface and download multiple caches to your GPSr at once.
You can start here at a site Garmin has created that allows you to search thousands of geocaches and load them directly to your Garmin device. You must create a myGarmin account to use this feature.

I would recommend spending a little more money on a unit that has a USB interface/cable. It is a lot faster than serial

USB is substantially faster than serial but for waypoints and routes it's no big deal (a few seconds in my experience). For those that move tracks and detailed maps around alot the speed difference will be substantial.

You can download cache waypoints directly to Garmin GPS from GSAK too

I also recommend getting a GPSr with the USB interface. Many new computers don't have a Serial port which means you have to get a Serial to USB adapter (more money) and many of those don't work . . . :o
