FTF prizes

Recommended Posts

Just a simple question. Ive seen a few caches that have a FTF prize in em!! the last one i missed by 15 min but it had a 15 dollar gift certificate to a local store!! ISNT THAT AGAINST GC regs?? or is that just another trade item?? let me know your opinons!! THANKS

No.

No meaning it isn't against GC policy? Or not just another trade item? I was curious about this too. I would think it would be allot of fun and add some excitement for FTF geocachers. Matter of fact, I was thinking of doing something similar on my first cache I place.

Not against the rules at all. Provided that it isn't commercial or soliciting or food you're pretty much in good shape (see here for more details). I think I put a $20 gift cert to EMS in my last cache. It was a puzzle cache and the FTF (a local legend) managed to find it despite an error in my code! Well deserved prize.

I have found that FTF prizes are rare in my area. I like to include one when I place a cache because it makes that first find just a little more special. For those that are highly motivated for that FTF it also adds to the thrill of competition to be the first. I follow a general principle: the harder the cache is to find, the more valuable the prize. Gift certificates are nice, although if the FTF happens to be from out of the area they may not be able to use it. I prefer unactivated geocoins myself.

Note that you can still include a prize even when the cache is a micro. One local cacher hid a very tough micro. He placed the FTF prizes in a second container somewhere nearby and included the coords in the micro. FTF got the whole thing, container and all.

I do highly recommend that any special FTF item be clearly offered as a prize and not a trade item. Otherwise you might catch the finder off guard with nothing of equal trade value, which places them in an awkward position.
