+VWDave Posted May 29, 2007 Posted May 29, 2007 I've ordered some TB's from here. But what I want to do in addition to that is use some of my VW Bus, Bug diecast toy vehicles as "Travel Bugs" How would I do that other than attaching one of my ordr TBs to it, don't want to do that. Quote

Although not trackable on gc.com someone shared this site (link removed by moderator) with me. I haven't used it though. Free tracking numbers that can be tracked on their site? Maybe you could buy the bugs and then put the numbers on the VW Bus. (If its a Hot Wheel VW bus i wouldnt send it out. I used to collect HW's.) But you would need something - the bus or attached info to show that the bus can be tracked and where to track it. But if you have to attach something, you might as well attach the TB dog tag. +Mach2003 Posted May 29, 2007 Posted May 29, 2007 Use the tracking number from your purchased TB, encode it on the bus, in a place a cacher will find it, and never release the actual tag. Quote
+Eartha Posted May 29, 2007 Posted May 29, 2007 You were given two tags, why not attach it, so it is recognized as a TB when it is in a cache? Otherwise someone's kid is going to grab it from the cache for a toy, Mom and Dad won't see that it's a travel bug and won't say "no, sorry Johnny", and no one will see the tracking number until they go to clean up Johnny's room, and then they'll see it only if they pick it up and glance at the side of it that has the number on it before they toss it in the toy box. Could happen. A travel bug should be readily recognized when it's in the cache. People look rather quickly, and if they don't see the tag, they will skim right past it, and your bug could be stuck in caches for weeks or months. You can say all you want on the TB page about how there is no tag, but most won't read the TB page before visiting a cache and won't know. Quote
+VWDave Posted May 30, 2007 Author Posted May 30, 2007 Good reply. Think I'll use a key chain and drill a hole in the Bus or Bug and attach the TB tags I've ordered to them. The numbers I got from the other site mentioned I could make a dogtag with the info on it. and do the same Quote

Moderator - why did you remove the link to the free tracking site? Other than forcing people to pay Groundspeak for tracking numbers, why discourage people from creating their own trackable items? That seems kinda slimy to me, and not at all in the spirit of the distributed global game of cooperative exploration. Quote

I'm so sorry you feel that way, however, we do not offer free advertising on this site. Anyone wishing to advertise with geocaching.com should go through the proper channels. If you read our forum guidelines which are posted here you will find the section that says: Commercial Postings/Solicitations are not allowed. Commercial content as a direct or indirect (either intentional or non-intentional) attempt to solicit customers through a forum post will be edited or deleted. Notwithstanding the above, Groundspeak reserves the right to include limited commercial content in this Forum, in its sole discretion. We also have a separate geocoin guidelines section posted here, where you will find the part that reads: Posts made with the intention of soliciting customers to a coin selling, tracking, or manufacturing website will not be tolerated. Links to other commercial coin selling, coin tracking, coin trading and coin manufacturing web sites will be permitted only with permission from Groundspeak. Permission requests may be sent to bizdev (at) Groundspeak.com. Were this a link directly to a coin, or a tag, it would be included, but this was a direct link to a storefront. And that is where we draw the line. We do not try to discourage anyone. I don't think I was being slimy at all. Ew! Me? Slimy? I think I'll go eat some worms now. Edited May 30, 2007 by Eartha Quote
+Knight2000 Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 Uhh. If the tracking numbers are free, then how is it commercial? Quote
+Eartha Posted May 30, 2007 Posted May 30, 2007 Uhh. If the tracking numbers are free, then how is it commercial? That site is a commercial site. I've looked and I do not find free tracking numbers on the site anywhere, so I don't know where that information came from. If you can point me to it, I'll see what I can do, but I've searched the site, and don't see it. Quote
