Huh? What are jamming trials about and who are jamming?

It's late...

You have to remember that the equipment that we use is military based. When new jamming technology comes out it has to be tested. Waste of time waiting until it's to late to find out if it works?

Before GPS the main thing that the military was concerned in jamming was radio frequencies. As the military have primary control over all frequencies, they have always been able to carry out their tests without affecting the public sector. Sadly with GPS, we use the exact same technology & frequencies that they do, so when they have to do their tests we get affected. :P

There may be a total different reason for the jamming, but the military are the only organisation that I can think of that will have that sort of authority?

Seeing other peoples comments shows the strength of argument for the European GPS system. I know the military could still jam the signal but the military couldn't switch the signal off because the signal is owned by the various EU states. For example the British military may want to switch it off for 'security reasons' but this would not fit in with, say, the German government. As the EU nations are all shareholders in the project helps balance the provision of the service. Unlike the American GPS (which we all currently use) and could be switched off at the flick of a switch because its owned and managed by own shareholder. The US Army.

Well thats only 30 minutes drive down the coast from me, would be interesting to go for a walk along the coastpath to see how it affects the gps.

Closest cache is "Nice’ and Awesome Cache" GCG6KG which could be affected if approaching via the coastpath from the North.
