+Jaz666 Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 Nope, and you've just started another one! If you don't like it, don't read it - all it takes is an extra half a centimetre of mouse movement. Quote
+jerryo Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 CONGRATULATIONS IN CAPS ON YOUR NEW THREAD And yes. Quote
+Mr'D Posted May 22, 2007 Author Posted May 22, 2007 Nope, and you've just started another one! I had already considered that before posting... but mine isn't pointless. This is a Geocaching forum, and the objective of my post is to solicit vote of those, whom I suspect are the silent majority, who find some recent posts well off-topic. Popcorn comes to mind. Jon Quote
+ryme-intrinseca Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 Personally, I like reading humorous threads like the popcorn one occasionally. Out of all the forums I belong to, this is undoubtedly the one where people are most restrained and the posts are most on topic! I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but a little lighthearted banter now and then keeps it interesting instead of being purely technical. (IMHO, of course) Quote
+Dorsetgal & GeoDog Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 Too many now! Anyone else agree? Jon Errr, nope Quote
+ryme-intrinseca Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 (edited) Well, if they're all going to be banned, I'm off somewhere more interesting. For instance, did you know that there's a webcam that allows you to watch paint dry? TTFN. Edited May 22, 2007 by ryme-intrinseca Quote
+Pengy&Tigger Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 I have the answer, don`t read the forums and go caching instead.. problem solved. Quote
+stora Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 Too many now! Anyone else agree? Jon I think there are too many but it is up to the mods on the board to say what goes and what does not. Most of the time I think they get it right. Quote
+The Cache Hoppers Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 Well it helps keeps us amused whilst we wait for something interesting to come up for discussion. Things have been pretty dull lately. I keep hitting F5 in the hope that something exciting is going to happen. PS Did you know that you can't click all 27 emoticons displayed in one posting? Quote
+PopUpPirate Posted May 22, 2007 Posted May 22, 2007 A bit of off-topic helps divert discussions away from the never-ending circle of "Congrats" / "Thinking of going paperless" / "Which PDA?" Quote

nobby.nobbs Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 nope, makes the place feel more user friendly and if you don't like em just walk past. but go on admit it you really want to post something you're just too nervous of joining in... Quote
Lactodorum Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 I think there are too many but it is up to the mods on the board to say what goes and what does not. Most of the time I think they get it right. While I quite understand what the OP is saying, we (moderators) try to err on the side of allowing threads rather than banning them. I would rather allow a dozen pointless but otherwise harmless threads than run the risk of banning one which could develop into a legitimate discussion. As a Firefox user I make use of the "ignore" button for quite a few threads (yes I know I really ought to read EVERY post but sometimes the will to live takes over ). On balance I'll leave things alone for the time being. Quote

There's loads more than 27 if you click "show all" I've just tried to post them all but got this message - "You have posted a message with more emoticons that this board allows. Please reduce the number of emoticons you've added to the message" I think there are too many but it is up to the mods on the board to say what goes and what does not. +Team S-J Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 I don't mind slightly off topic threads. It's pointless responses that should be banned! Quote
+Midnight Ramblers Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 It's far easier to ignore pointless threads (or ones I am not interested in) than to ignore pointless conversations (or ones I am not interested in) in real life. I am just suggesting to my manager that we have an 'off-topic'/'pointless conversation' room set up at work. I'll move his desk in tomorrow Quote

I'll move his desk in tomorrow I met with my manager last week to talk about how many hours each part of my work takes me. He was totting it up at the end, and he said something like... "right, five hours, for that, 10 hours for that, 5 hours for general office crap..." How true! Quote
+Wizard William and Team Morris Posted May 23, 2007 Posted May 23, 2007 I quite like the off topics. Like others have pointed out; I only read the ones I think might be of interest to me. Quote
+Bigby & Snow Posted May 24, 2007 Posted May 24, 2007 I don't mid off-topics, but I think that one thread per topic is enough (congrats etc). I trust the moderators, I leave judging for them Quote

+goldpot Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 Thread hijack! If you see a thread you believe to be pointless, try to steer it towards something more to your liking. We went there last year and I was temping to place a cache there, but living in London suggested that it wasn't a good idea. Quote
