+Knight2000
We use a Meridian Gold GPSr. It came with a lanyard from Magellan. I would like a larger lanyard like this and was searching the forums for more info. I came accross an old thread about Maggie lanyards. Is there a problem with the one that came with my unit? Was the need to make another due to the units not originally coming with lanyards? Do the provided lanyards fail over time? It seems fine to me and i use it more than i thought i would. I would just hate to damage the unit due to lanyard failure. Does anyone have any info on this? Does walmart sell lanyards like this? (Its a nice lanyard- but the shipping was a bit high for me.) Where could these be pruchased locally? The one the goes on the MeriGold is small and only your wrist goes through. Thanks! Quote Link to comment
vagabond
Try your local sporting goods, maybe even wally world for the lanyard Quote Link to comment
Pinon
Lanyards can be found most everywhere. I too have a Magellan Merigold and purchased a neck lanyard at Sportsman Warehouse. They had a lot to choose from..and cheap too. One other comment...it usually NOT the lanyard that fails...it's the connection point at the GPS'r that craps out...It's the weak link in the lanyard system. The brass threaded part that is press fit in the back of the Magellan usually pulls out and then the GPS'r falls. I did a minor glue job on the brass screw on the back of my Merigold. It has held for the last 2 years without failure. Works for me..... Quote Link to comment

If the brass female part in the maggie fails, then the new thingy someone was selling wouldnt make a difference either way, would it? I was just wondering why people were buying those. Im not saying it isnt nice- just trying to figure out the advantage. Thanks!! Quote Link to comment
vagabond
I used my gold for over 3 years and either carried it in a pocket when I needed both hands or held on to it. Quote Link to comment
+Stunod
Magellan never used to provide lanyards for the Meridian series. I believe they first started shipping them with the MeriColor. I still haven't gotten a royalty check from Team Flushingrouse... Quote Link to comment
+Knight2000
Well, my small wrist lanyard for the MeriGold failed. I am glad that the unit was not damaged though. (It probably can be repaired- i just dont want it to fail again.) Do i now need to go to a hardware store to buy parts to make a replacement? Are their any other options besides ordering one from Magellan? Quote Link to comment

Since I usually carry GPS in my hand, I made a lanyard ring for back of unit, similar to Maggie Lanyard, and use a small dog leash to attach GPS to backpack strap... Its more for "I cant lose it if its tied on".... Just be aware that if you use an around the neck lanyard it should have a "safety release" if you fall and lanyard catches on some thing, if has the potential to strangle you. A bruised neck and a break away lanyard is much better alternative. Dale Quote Link to comment
+EScout
Home made wrist lanyard. Connector is made by soldering brass washer to brass screw (I believe 4 40). Cover with 2-part epoxy putty. It screws in and the epoxy keeps it tight against the back, will not scratch surfaces. Quote Link to comment
