GPX files and GPS

Recommended Posts

I am in the market for a new GPS. I have my standard budget rig. Garmin Etrex and a Palm M105.

Does a GPS exist that lets you load the GPX file information (Hints, Description, etc) directly to the GPS?

That way I would just have one device.

I was looking at the Venture CX and the geocaching mode, would that do?

No my knowledge, no GPS on the market can load up descriptions. The Venture Cx (I just ordered one myself) has a 30-character field where you can write in the hint or comment. You would use EasyGPS or GSAK to do this. There is software and hardware to enable a PDA to act as a GPS but it gets expensive.

What most cachers do is use a GPS to cache and keep the PDA loaded with cache page descriptions in case they need to resort to them.

They do sell PDAs like the Garmin iQUE which has a GPS. I've used mine for spur of the moment caching, but you have to be very careful walking around with a PDA. One drop and they are toast.

There is a program called GeoBuddy that allows you to upload the Cache Name, the Hint, and the Owner, depending on how much room you have. You can also set it to change the default icon for caches based on what type of cache it is. It helps me a lot when I'm out in a new area without printouts or my laptop.

I have a Legend CX, and carry 5000+ caches with small descriptions (100 chars max), hints, and child waypoints using POI. Data is fed from a macro in GSAK.

I also have a Palm that uses bluetooth to connect to a GPS 10x, and it is more accurate than the etrex (SirfIII chip). It uses the same maps as the etrex, and has the same POI. Cachemate has full descriptions (ex photos).
