Free Software for Geocoin Design

I would like to design my own geocoin. I will obviously need some sort of graphics software for this. Can anyone recommend a good program, preferably free for download off the Internet, that I can use to do this?

I've heard a lot of good things about The Gimp (it's mentioned in the other thread) - and it is free.
