Google Map - My Map

If you have seen the roll your own aspect of Google map you could see how handy it could be.

NOW - has anyone seen a way to create one using gpx or other files?

I, for one have all kinds of waypoint files that I'd like to add to a Google map.

I have a web site that will do it for you. Still working on it, so the interface is a tad rough. Buy heck, it's free. shakeastick.com/POIList

Once you create and activate an account to log in with, just upload the GPX file to a new list, open the list, and click the "Show All" link at the bottom of the list of POIs in the left frame.

Have fun, and HAPPY CACHING!

I have used http://gpsvisualizer.com/ to convert many tracks and waypoints to a GE (KML) format.

Once you get the basic KML format from the above website, you can further edit the file to do more customization (size, shape, color, etc).

GE is endless fun. Thanks a bunch to http://gpsvisualizer.com/ for making it happen. I have also used it to overlay details of fishing trips onto nautical maps for my dad to remember by.

GE is not the problem - there are many ways to create a KML file for GR - Garmin's Mapsource will work fine.

BUY Google Maps My Map nada - unless I'm dumb.

Advantage to Google Maps is one can easily put it on another site with the same G map interface.

Did you know Google Maps can read KML? If you can get your data into KML format and put it on the Web somewhere, you can quickly make a Google Map out of it using Google's own interface.

But then don't you still need the Google API and all that ?

I want to KISS - plus let Google's servers host it <_<

BTW - your stuff looks good - but a lot over my head.

Though I managed to create a KML file, then a Google map with it.

Should be an easy way to transfer all that to Google My map.

It looks like Google has not yet created a way to get a KML file into "My Maps," but I'll bet it'll happen soon. Meanwhile, it's very easy to do this:

http://maps.google.com/?q=[url_of_a_KML_file]

Here's an example that will only work for a couple days -- because .kmz files on GPSVisualizer.com are temporary -- but you get the idea:

http://maps.google.com/?q=http://www.gpsvi....220.72.218.kmz

Hey - that works - I could host my own KMZ file.

http://maps.google.com/?q=http://home.colu...askins/test.kmz

Here is a quick one - but too many waypoints.

One advantage of My Map - is it's searchable.

Damm it's hell being a map junkie <_<

Thanks again.
