How Do You Seach By Waypoint With Cachemate

Just got my Palm Tx, Cachemate and GeoBuddy (makers of easy GPS).

All are working and I loaded 500 waypoints into the palm. So far so good....but how do you search by Waypoint ID?

If I go to CacheMate / Srch / Last Search, the only option I see is to search by coordinates.

I must be missing some setup parm.

I just "search" by the Name, alphabetically, or if I have to, by Waypoint, Alphabetically . . .

The processor in my Palm M500 makes other searching, on the more than 1000 caches in my database, go rather slowly . . .

The Cachemate/Srch/Nearest or Last Search is really only used when you want to find the nearest caches to a particular lat and long. If you select Nearest it will ask for parameters eg, n,s,e or w, distance, max records, whether found or not found etc from that particular Lat and Long. Otherwise you can select Last Search to use the earlier search parameters.

To find a particular cache by ID use the Record List View (the first screen that lists all the caches). At the bottom of the screen there is an option to sort by Wpt or Name. Select Name to sort by Name. Select Wpt to sort by waypoint (Geocaching.com's ID code - always starts with "GC". Scroll up/down select your desired cache and tap it and the cache details will show.

Beware caches with "additional waypoints" will not show that additional data - a defect currently with Cachemate - without an awkward workaround.

Hi GURU4HIRE,

Below is something I wrote for my dad when he got his Palm. One thing, if you have several categories, i.e., Found, Not Found, Mine, when you are doing your search for nearby caches, make sure you're either in the 'All' category or the 'Not Found' category.

Searching for caches . . .

From within a cache listing

1.Tap 'Cachemate' in the top left corner or the menu button in the bottom left corner of the silk screen.

2.Tap 'Nearest Caches'

3.Coord's will automatically be filled in from the cache listing

4.'OK'

5.You can make some selections on the 'Search Filters' page

6.'OK'

7.Cachemate will build and sort the Cache List

8.You can then scroll through listings and see Waypoint names, distance and heading from the currently selected cache, the difficulty and terrain ratings.

9.Choose 'Go To' for a particular cache, 'Close' or 'Move' (to change categories)

From the main Cachemate page

1.Tap 'Cachemate' in the top left corner or the menu button in the bottom left corner of the silk screen.

2.Tap 'Srch'

3.Tap 'Nearest Caches

4.Enter your coordinates. I would highlight individual parts of the coord, i.e. for N37 29.564 W089 40.254 . . . highlight '37' and enter your new degree, highlight '29' or 29.564' and enter your new decimal minutes. If I remember correctly, as long as you use the correct format, you can get by with out the 'degree' symbol.

5.'OK'

6.Make any changes you might wish on the 'Search Filters' page

7.OK

10.Cachemate will build and sort the Cache List

11.You can then scroll through listings and see Waypoint names, distance and heading from the currently selected cache, the difficulty and terrain ratings.

12.Choose 'Go To' for a particular cache, 'Close' or 'Move' (to change categories)

Well, just like taking a test . . . slow down and read the question.

From your main screen, in the bottom right corner, you can choose between Waypoint Name or Code. Whichever you are in, start 'writing' with your stylus in the text entry area. As you write the first letters, you will start heading toward ID's that match your entry.

The 'search for nearest' is free bonus content!

That's why it's better to create several smaller databases (one PQ per database) in Cachemate. Edited by TrailGators

Beware caches with "additional waypoints" will not show that additional data - a defect currently with Cachemate - without an awkward workaround.

I use GSAK to group additional waypoints with the caches they belong to. In Cachemate waypoint view the additional waypoint will be right below the listing for the cache with a similar waypoint. The GC is dropped off and a waypoint like "GC1234" will become "1234" and the additional parking coordinates will be listed as "1234PK" right below the cache they belong to. Not a perfect solution but it works. When exporting to cachemate simply enter "%drop2 %children %drop2%c_Prefix" in the box for GSAK to name the waypoints.

That is what I meant by an 'awkward workaround'. If a cache has 10 additional waypoints (carparks, questions to answer etc) you have to look up 11 records to get all the cache details!

I've ditched Cachemate for an html reader on my Palm. I use iSilo, but there are other html readers available. An html export from GSAK gives all the cache details just like you get when you view the cache page on the web with no need to look up additional records.

Ok I guess I was having trouble parsing your sentence.

Well with my $30 Palm IIIxe I guess I will have to stay with the awkward workaround.
