+Harry Dolphin
I was looking in the NGS county list, and came across Navassa Island. The benchmark I was looking at is TZ1473 (not in the geocaching list), Station Lulu. Navassa Island is a two square mile, uninhabited island between Haiti and Jamaica. It seems mostly to be noted for guano mining, and goat herds. Wikipedia says: "The government of the United States claims the island as an unorganized unincorporated territory, and administers it through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. However, the island is also claimed by Haiti." TZ1473'DESCRIBED BY NATIONAL OCEAN SERVICE 1981 (RHH) TZ1473'THE STATION IS LOCATED AT LULU BAY ON NAVASSA ISLAND. TZ1473' TZ1473'TO REACH FROM THE LANDING AT LULU BAY, PACK UPHILL ON TZ1473'CONCRETE WALKWAY TO A SMALL CONCRETE BUILDING ON RIGHT, JUST TZ1473'BEFORE REACHING A POINT WHERE SIDEWALK LEVELS OFF. TZ1473'TURN RIGHT AND GO EAST FOR APPROXIMATELY 70 METERS TO THE TZ1473'STATION AT THE MOST SOUTHEASTERLY POINT OF LULU BAY. TZ1473' TZ1473'THE STATION IS A STANDARD NOS BRASS DISK STAMPED---LULU 1981---, TZ1473'CEMENTED IN A DRILL HOLE IN EXPOSED BEDROCK. IT IS LOCATED, TZ1473'2.0 METERS (6.5 FT) SOUTHEAST FROM A PAD EYE CEMENTED IN BEDROCK TZ1473'AND 5 METERS (16.5 FT) WEST FROM A PAD EYE CEMENTED TZ1473'IN BEDROCK. TZ1473' TZ1473'HEIGHT OF LIGHT SHOWN WAS 1.5 METERS. There are eleven benchmarks on Navassa, but no people to hunt for them. Alas, I have decided not to travel to Navassa Island for the benchmarks. I think I'm allergic to guana. Quote Link to comment
+NorthWes
Hmmm - I wonder if the crew placing the mark got to choose its name? That's a LULU of a place to have to work! Quote Link to comment
+Shorelander
There are harder places to get to, though. I think we should petition Deb to get permission to recover HP0385. Quote Link to comment
68-eldo
These are "in my county" but I don't think I will be getting them any time soon. +Shorelander
Ooh! I miss Hawaii...but we have a new agency, it seems, courtesy of DE5202 - a US Navy Hydrographic Office Triangulation Station Quote Link to comment
