Benson - The Tates - TLHM

Bunter - Lord Peter Wimsey - TLHM

Hobson -

Riff-Raff - Dr Frankenfurter (Rocky Horror Picture Show) - SP

Max - The Harts (Hart to Hart) - SP

Hudson - The Bellamys - CHC

So we're just looking for the master of Hobson, which I always thought would be the toughie.

Here's a clue: I'm just looking for a first name.

More clues to follow if we don't make any progress.

OK, nothing too taxing for a Friday Night

What was the first advert on UK tv for?

What time was it broadcast? (24hr clock please)

Bonus question:

What was the first advert on Channel 5 for?

Wasn't it SR toothpaste (or something like that?)

For a time I'll guess 6 o clock pm?

Channel 5 - no idea

Wasn't it SR toothpaste (or something like that?) Close - worth half a ding, but we can do better than that.

Was it Gibbs SR Toothpaste on 22nd Sept 1955 at just after 8am?

or even 8pm... :)

or even 8pm... :)

Closer, but I think we can get it to the exact minute (24hr clock - stuck in my mind when I heard it, not really a clue but you'll see why when all is revealed)

Don't forget the bonus question. First advert on Channel 5?

Full ding for the product, date correct but not the time.

Well I know The Archers killed off Grace in order to put the kybosh on ITV's openning night, so assuming The Archers went out at the same time in those days, and that the ad was at the start of the evening I'll go for 19:00.

Edit for typo and grammar!

If only I could give points for trivia, the Archers question was going to be the bonus. Time guess further away than Go Pack Go's corrected entry.

12 minutes sounds the most obvious, given the clue. :)

and Channel 5 is, I think, the easy part which is Chanel No 5

OK, I award full ding honour to Go Pack Go.

20:12 - Olympic year.

Chanel No 5 was indeed the first advert

Nice one! Hadn't dawned on me... DOH!

Next question is, what comes next in this sequence?

Maurice, Alexander, James, Edward, James, Leonard, ?

Well, thanks to recently solving a puzzle cache involving Harold Macmillian's real first name (I won't tell you the cache number, I don't want to spoil it) I think its the first names of prime ministers:

Maurice Harold Macmillian

Alexander (Alec) Douglas-Home

James Harold Wilson

Edward (Ted) Heath

Leonard James Callaghan

So the next one would be Margaret Thatcher

In that case, who was the 2nd James? :)

EDIT: Ahh Harold Wilson had another go, after Ted Heath, ignore me :D

Very well done!! DING!!

The two James' are of course Harrold Wilson and Leonard was actually James Callaghan.

That's another ding to Rutson, 3 to Simply Paul and 3 to Sharpeset (and a bonus for spelling it right I reckon. Do you know what the chorus is? I've never been able to work it out!).

There's two more available for 10. And we still need 7 and 8. (sorry MartyBartfast, that one's already gone)

I know what you mean about the chorus! As I own an REM songbook, I can put you out of your misery by revealing that the words crammed into the chorus are "Call me when you try to wake her up" (not 'calling Jamaica' as I used to think.....')

Cheers

Pete

For 10 Rutson's right except for the three missing words.

Isn't it "It's just a change in me, something in my liberty"?

Annoyingly I could have got quite a few more I if I had looked before,

Okay, so some clues.

For 7 it would help to be an ageing socialist or perhaps a listener to radio 4 as he seems to always be on these days. The next line rhymes btw.

For 8 it would help to be an ageing hippy from Canada by way of California (or to own an all-time classic album). The next line also rhymes.

For 10 Rutson's right except for the three missing words.

Guessing the artists from the clues...

7 Billy Bragg?

8 Neil Young?

Don't have a clue as to the titles or next lines though...

10 I think the title is "Lucky Man" but I am trying not to be pedantic :D I thought you were talking about Rutson until I read the question properly Alex :D

CQD (apparently - although according to one of our lecturers the actual message was -.. --- -.-- --- ..- .-- .- -. - .. -.-. . .. -. - .... .- - --- .... -... --- .-.. .-.. --- -.-. -.- ... )

DING!

CQ is the usual initial call for poeple (literally sounding like seek you), the D was added for distress and was the standard distress call amoung British radio operators. Before the Titanic set sail the international distress call was set to be repeatedly ...---... ; actually although the dahs and dits spell out SOS it should not have the gaps signifying spaces for letters. The radio operator was reminded by his junior to also send the new distress call but the first was indeed -.-. --.- -.. or CQD.

.-. . .- .-.. .-.. -.-- -.-- --- ..- ... .... --- ..- .-.. -.. -. --- - -... . ... --- .-. ..- -.. . :D
