Elektra?

DING !!!!!

Wow not had one of those for a while!

Okay - A lot of imaging applications such as scanners and digital cameras use a TWAIN interface.

1) what is the original source of the word twain?

2) What unofficial acronym does it stand for?

Neither of these questions have technical answers!

I just googled it and  at the answer to question 2!

I don't know the answer to 1 but 2 is:-

Thing Without An Interesting Name.

P

I thought it was "Technology without an interesting name"

Yes it is "Technology"

DING goes to the first person who knows who wrote the line "never the twain shall meet"

OK, just got home from Estonia, Mrs. LHM tells me it was Kipling, from 'The ballad of where east meets west'

And apparently he also makes exceedingly good cakes

Thanks. I'm sure a scientist will be along to show how it can't be true.

I'd like to know what links 'Pretty Woman' actor Richard Gere and late 'I liked it so much I bought the company' Remington CEO Victor Kiam.

Posted (edited)

Ok, as that appears to have been too tricky (they both have/had silly middle names. Gere's is Tiffany and Kiam's was Kermit) try this on for size: Footie 'legend' Kevin Keegan had a hit (ish) record as a solo singer. It reached number 31 in June 1979 and stayed in the charts for six weeks. What was he thinking of the title?

Woops, sorry so into getting ready for Crufts, bathing to dog etc, I forgot to come back and look for the ding!

OK, this is hopefully, a straightforward one, NAME THIS STRUCTURE & PLACE ...

For the Ding, you need to give the correct name, not the nickname please. :o

DING to adrianjohn! Well, you are in Lincolnshire after all!

Anyone visiting Lincoln should go into the cathedral and try to spot him without any help!

Staying in Lincolnshire as nothing interesting happens here anyway!

The above picture is of the Grimsby Dock Tower.

1. Where can you see the building that inspired its design?

2. Where in Britain can you see a similar structure?

3. What was the purpose of the Grimsby Dock Tower?

Posted

I'm going to guess at:

1) Looks Moorish to me, so I'd say southern Spain

2) There's a chimney that's pretty similar. I saw it on TV the other day.

3) I'll take a stab at a shot tower

Venice?

Sway Tower in the new forest?

Is it a marker tower - like the one at Greenwich that dropped a marker at noon every day for masters to set their chronographs to? - or a really big lookout tower for watching for mackerel shoals?

Posted

3. Do they use the height of the water tower to advantage, say by using the water power for hydraulics of some sort?

Correct, - the water provided hydraulic power to operate lockpit gates and dockside cranes.

one Ding to Dorsetgal & GeoDog.

Now we need to know the two where questions. The answer to Q.2 is not Legoland Windsor though there is a model in the park there.

Ah, now that sounds like the Limehouse Accumulator

The accumulator type system replaced the simpler water storage system that was used in the Dock Tower which had a relatively short working life. A building that housed the accumulator was built adjacent to it about twenty or so years later.

I think it looks a bit like the town hall tower in Bradford, so that'll be my answer to number 2. Unless of course you mean a similar structure that does the same job. The one at Bradford has a wonderful carillion that plays various tunes, but the tune normally ends before its obvious what tune. Not a water tower though.

Which leads me onto number 1 - I'm pretty sure the Bradford tower was inspired by one in Florence, to show just how rich the city of Bradford was at the time. How times change!

I'd have said the tower in Piazza St Marco in Venezia (Or St Mark's Square in Venice)

I'm not sure about the other similar building, but I must have seen it a few times as it certainly looks familiar, and I don't think I've ever been to Grimsby <_<

The country is correct but it is not Venice.

To give a little clue lathama should know the answers.

Is 1. the clock tower in Siena, the 'Torre' something and 2. the Chamberlin Clock tower, Birmingham?

A big DING to the LHM ;)

Yes, the inspiration for the design was the Palazzo Publico (Town Hall) in Sienna, and one of many other copies around the world is clock tower at Birmingham University.
