+The Patrician Posted November 14, 2012 Posted November 14, 2012 Invasion of Sicily? Codename escapes me...... Quote
+TheOldfields Posted November 14, 2012 Posted November 14, 2012 No ding for either of Market Garden or Sicily. I'm not specifically after the operation name... general aim/location will do the job. Quote
+MTH Posted November 14, 2012 Posted November 14, 2012 Is it the to do with the fake army to make Germany think the invasion would be around Calais? Quote
+TheOldfields Posted November 14, 2012 Posted November 14, 2012 Would get you a nice purple ding. The British ran a ring of double agents where one of their major tasks was to persuade the Germans that the invasion wasn't going to happen in Normandy. Both the upcoming Fourth Army attack on Norway and the First US Army Group attack on the pas de Calais were fiction as was the actual existence of the two armies. Here is one of their tanks. Quote
+MTH Posted November 14, 2012 Posted November 14, 2012 Thanks. A bit of a lucky guess. What was Major William Martin's role in WW2? Quote
+MartyBartfast Posted November 14, 2012 Posted November 14, 2012 Thanks. A bit of a lucky guess. What was Major William Martin's role in WW2? Wasn't that the name they made up for the body that was dropped off Spain with fake papers to make Hitler think we were going to invade via Italy (I think), rather than Normandy? It was called Operation Mincemeat. Quote
+MTH Posted November 14, 2012 Posted November 14, 2012 Ding. He was "The Man Who Never Was". Operation Mincemeat is correct, but it was to make Germany think the allies would invade Greece and Sardinia rather then Sicily. Quote
+MartyBartfast Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 What's the connection between: Limbo Lust Gluttony Greed Wrath Heresy Violence Fraud Treason Quote
+MTH Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 The Rake's Progress by Hogarth? I'm sure some of them fit, but not sure about them all. Quote
+MartyBartfast Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 Not The Rake's Progress, but I had to go look it up just in case it worked - interesting stuff. Quote
+Betelgeuse Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 Dante's Inferno. I've never read it but I have read the Larry Niven sci-fi parody Quote
+MartyBartfast Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 Dante's Inferno. I've never read it but I have read the Larry Niven sci-fi parody Ding, they're the nine levels of hell in Dante's Inferno. Quote
+maxx borchovski Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 I was going to say Russel Brand's bucket list... Quote
+Betelgeuse Posted November 16, 2012 Posted November 16, 2012 HMS Belfast has been moored in the Pool of London since 1971 as a museum ship. The forward six inch guns are aimed at a target some 12.5 miles distant on the outskirts of London to demonstrate their range. What is the target? Quote
+Simply Paul Posted November 16, 2012 Author Posted November 16, 2012 As featured on QI - and this quiz before, I seem to recall - it's London Gateway (formerly Scratchwood) Services on the M1. Quote

A quick shufty at a map puts Wembly at about the right location so at a guess, it's Wembly Stadium. Quote
+MTH Posted November 17, 2012 Posted November 17, 2012 I thought it was a service station as well, but South Mimms. Pretty impressive for 70 year old technology. Quote

DING! to you sir. That's just what she said... Thanks very much. Here's a semi topical one. The new series of An Island Parish began last night. Name the islands which have been the focus of the series, from the launch in January 2007 to last night's start of series 7. Don't include A Seaside Parish or A Country Parish Quote
+MartyBartfast Posted November 17, 2012 Posted November 17, 2012 I think one of them was St Marys, Scilly isles. Quote
+MartyBartfast Posted November 18, 2012 Posted November 18, 2012 One was on a Scottish isle, I'll have a guess at Barra. Quote
+Simply Paul Posted November 18, 2012 Author Posted November 18, 2012 Marty wins a Ding with two out of three. Credit to MTH for knowing the new series is set on Sark. Barra was the focus of series 5 & 6 and the Scillies, with St Mary's as the main island, featured in series 1-4. The original series producer sadly passed away - his voiceover style was one of the best things about the earlier series, I think. Anyway, over to MartyBartfast. Quote
+MartyBartfast Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 I was assuming each series was filmed in a different place so I wasn't expecting that! Anyway Who are the two human characters in this statue, and where was it taken. (bonus ding for the 4 legged friend's name too) Quote
dodgydaved Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 I reckon its Desparate Dan and Minnie the Minx, and I would suggest at the home of the comic in Dundee perhaps. Quote
+Pharisee Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 I reckon its Desparate Dan and Minnie the Minx, and I would suggest at the home of the comic in Dundee perhaps. I concur with Dave about the two characters but wouldn't know the location. Was thge mutt's name 'Gnasher'? Quote
+MartyBartfast Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 Ding to DodgyDaveD. Dong to Pharisee, Gnasher was Dennis the Menace's dog and he was all spiky/hairy. This one is Desparate Dan's dog who was apparently called Dawg (though I can't remember it myself). Quote
dodgydaved Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 Cheers, Marty! In what sort of a setting might you find a Kaldo, an LD and even, perhaps, a Bessemer? Quote
+Simply Paul Posted November 19, 2012 Author Posted November 19, 2012 I know the Bessemer process was a breakthrough in producing quality steel from fragile iron, so I'll guess at a foundry. Quote

+Simply Paul Posted November 19, 2012 Author Posted November 19, 2012 Thanks. I've googled the others for the curious; they're other, more modern types of furnace. Next question. I'm landing at Chek Lap Kok Airport; where am I visiting? Quote
+MartyBartfast Posted November 19, 2012 Posted November 19, 2012 Has an eastern sound to it so I'll guess Nepal (perhaps going to Everest). Quote
+maxx borchovski Posted November 20, 2012 Posted November 20, 2012 You would be visiting Hong Kong. Quote
+Simply Paul Posted November 20, 2012 Author Posted November 20, 2012 A Ding-a-roo for MaxxB! It's on a manmade island and is a lot safer than the old airport which was basically 'in town'. Quote

+MTH Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 (edited) I have a feeling it's called Dancing with the Stars Neither watched either show - complete rubbish. Lot's of nobodies doing something I'm not interested in really badly. Edited November 22, 2012 by MTH Quote
+mellers Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 I have a feeling it's called Dancing with the Stars Neither watched either show - complete rubbish. Lot's of nobodies doing something I'm not interested in really badly. Well, you certainly get a DING for the answer but I'm not sure it's true to say that they all do it badly. I think that part of the appeal to some is that some of them improve and end up doing it rather well. However there is no requirement to be interested in, like or watch either programme for the DING. Over to you. Quote
+MTH Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 Only my opinion. of course. Moving on. Bruce Forsyth's wife, Wilnelia, was Miss World in 1975, but where did she represent? Quote
