I think this may signalling the beginning of the end for stand-alone, handheld GPS units. When features start to converge and become commodities bundled with other items, the market for purpose-built devices eventually goes away.

In ten years or so, a wallet-sized gizmo may pack all the features of your laptop computer, cell-phone, GPS, digital camera, entertainment system, and probably offer a handful of whiz-bang tools we haven't thought of yet.

How much better or cheaper would a single-purpose device have to be in order to compete with that?

The sooner the better, please.

Hopefully they'll have a built in personality. That'll give me someone to talk to driving down the highway

(Anybody read Roadmarks by Zelazny?)
