Gipsie Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 I am thinking of taking a day trip to somewhere unusual next week and do some caching. I will be willing to drive an hour or two from Absecon, NJ. Can anyone recommend a good place to go? Maybe NY or PA? Quote
tomfuller & Quill Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 If you're looking for a cacher that knows the unusual places in Philadelphia, contact hndlbr. The last I knew, he works the night shift at the U of PA Psych Ward. He was very helpful when I had a large TB that wanted to go to the Penn Relays. Tom Fuller Crescent, OR Quote
Chuy! Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 Try the Northeast section. They may have their own website too, but I'll let you figure that out - just google New Jersey Geocachers or something to that effect. Quote
TexasGringo Posted March 8, 2007 Posted March 8, 2007 I once had an Idea...but after a nap, it went away. Quote
MissJenn Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 Maybe a moderator can move this to the right forum. Please? Thanks! Quote
Packanack Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 Central Park New York City Ramapo County Reservation Mahwah, NJ Ramapo State Park, Oakland, NJ All have high density, but are you looking to hike or what is your preference. If you are going on a weekend, I might also suggest Long Island, it is not too much unlike the Jersey Shore in some respects if you get far enough out on the Island. Quote
Peconic Bay Sailors Posted March 10, 2007 Posted March 10, 2007 Harriman State Park, NY just over the border from NJ where rt 287 meets the NY thruway... Quote
briansnat Posted March 10, 2007 Posted March 10, 2007 I second Packanack's recomendation of Rampo County Reservation and/or Ramapo Mt State Forest. High cache density, nice scenery, some easy caches and some physically challenging ones. Also the Gerbil cache, oldest in NJ is there and I think there are still some free Gerbil geocoins available for finders. . It's under 2 hrs from Abescon Quote
HaLiJuSaPa Posted March 10, 2007 Posted March 10, 2007 (edited) We're going to suggest Rockerfeller State Park Preserve in Westchester County, NY, about 25-30 miles north of Manhattan. In an otherwise urban/suburbanized area, in this large preserve (once the Rockerfeller family's digs) you will see farms and some awesome views of the lower Hudson River valley. You will literally not believe where you are. "Ha"'s mom had a real estate luncheon at the restaurant on the preserve yesterday and she never knew in all her life that such a place existed here so close to the City. And there are lots of caches all over the place too, here are a couple of ones we found: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...4f-37c3f1123b81 As far as I know the southernmost (and closest to NYC) "jonboy" cache. He is noted for having hides with reasonably challenging hikes and awesome views throughout NY's Hudson Valley region. This is a romp through the actual grounds of Rockerfeller's estate, most of it is very great views of both the mansion and the Hudson River area itself. More long (about 2 miles round trip) than challenging, even our kids (4 1/2 and 2 1/2 when we did this cache last April) handled it fine and loved it. Our log entry shows a picture of a tree along the way with "lovers grafiti" dating as far back as the 1960's. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...61-097331f0dd08 Another "jonboy" cache (no he doesn't "rule" the park ). Great view at the cache itself, reasonable hike up a hill that passes a farm with cows and lots of great woods on a trail. I think there are literally another 10 or so caches in this State Park (we've done 2 others of them that are litterally each about 500 ft. or so from the 2nd cache we mention above) so you'll easily be able to make a day of it.
