Change from 6 to 7 figure waypoints

I'm sure I read a thread about this before but that was before I discovered how to to download waypoints!

 

Is there a simple way of dealing with the new seven figure waypoints? e.g. This evening I tried to download some new caches onto my GPS where the first six digits were the same for each of them, so only one of the caches downloaded - presumably because the GPS only recognised the first six figures and not the seventh one which was different in every case.

 

I have been using easyGPS to download them - is the answer to use GSAK or is there an easier alternative?

I use GSAK to download them - on the send to bit for your GPS you tell it how many characters it can display for a waypoint- I use %smart and have it set at 8 letters- but you can do it as 6 (thought your new one would take more??) i then get names on the GPS like "SECRETGA" "SEALSLIK""GOINGGRE" although when it comes to series of caches it can be a bit difficult to work out "FIFEROCA" is one of the Fife Rocks! series ( dont ask me what one though!!)

I use GSAK, and use %drop2 in the waypoint name field. This drops the "GC" from the start of the name so that the name is only 4 or 5 digits. It also makes finding waypoints on the GPS easier.

true ... but you can display the Smart Name as a field on GSAK and if there is any ambiguity in the waypoint name , its dead easy to edit and override it to whatver you want it called ...... so "FIFEROCA" could be changed to "FIFER1" say.....

Can I join this thead too please? I'm having the same problem as allieballie as I use a yellow eTrex. Form the answers to date I think that I'd like to do what The Royles are suggesting, but preferably just drop the second 'C' (that way they'd all start with 'G' and be listed in the same folder on my eTrex). However, where/how do I use the %drop2 (sorry, should that be %drop1?)?

 

I use GSAKand have been able to import a macro or 2 to date, but knowing nothing about programming or databases, I don't know where to put this.

 

Any help would be really appreciated?

If you want all your waypoints to start wit a 'G', you can put G%drop2 in this box, effectively dropping the 'C'.

I'm adding my thanks to wizard1974uk's - between them both The Bongtwashes and The Royles have given me EXACTLY what I wanted and I've learned more about GSAK and code to boot! Aren't cahers and these forums great?

I send to my GPS from the MM overlay on my PDA and fell foul of the 7 digit code on Saturday whilst doing and new series. %drop2 has cured the problem

indeed. It's not a matter of not having persevered, it's more a matter of not being able to find time to persevere between working, looking after a child, domestic stuff, oh and...of course....finding and logging geocaches!
