Recommended Posts

;) Hello I bought my wife a Garmin Rhino 110.I was told I need a FCC License if I wanted to use the radio part of it because of the GMRS and FRS frequencies. Is this true and if so how do I get the license?I have talk on cbs for years and never need a license.

Thank you for your time.

The Rino 110 has 22 communication channels:

channels 1-14 are FRS and transmit up to 2 miles.

channels 15-22 are GMRS and transmit up to 5 miles.

To use the GMRS channels you are required to have a FCC license.

The applcation should have been in the box with the Rino. But email Rino for one.

P.S.

C.B. also needs a license!!!!

Correction, the license requirement for CB bands was dropped years ago. You do, however, still need to be licensed for most other frequencies, including the 10 meter found on many CB type radios commonly sold at "travel centers".

You can find the GMRS license application on the FCC website. I believe it is around $80 for five years.

As noted above, the Citizen's Radio Service has no license requirement.

From the FCC summary:

"If you operate a radio that has been approved exclusively under the rules that apply to FRS, you are not required to have a license."

A GMRS radio does require a license; this includes the Rino 110--even to operate on frequencies shared with FRS.
