Amusing "To Reach" descriptions

One of my favorites:

"... FROM THIS POINT THERE IS A WELL-MARKED TRAIL LEADING NE AND N TO THE SUMMIT OF THE MOUNTAIN. IT IS A DISTANCE OF ABOUT 8.0 MI. AND IS ABOUT A 6-HR. HORSE PACK. NOTE--REFERENCE MARK 2 WAS TOO CLOSE TO FOCUS INSTRUMENT."

 

Been up there (DX5119) a few times (10,834 feet). Also the oldest mark in Riverside County ,CA. I'm no horse expert, but getting a horse up there would be real interesting. It is a designated USFS Wilderness area, so that would be about it for transportation, other than your own feet! Have not seen any pack animals up there, yet. Have WISHED for a horse up there on occasion!

You don't carry 25 feet of rope in your helicopter? I'd think that anything less than 50 feet would be considered poorly prepared.

My copter is still on order, but you're right--I should be making a list of necessary equipment. I think maybe even 100 feet of rope and some carabiners, don't you?

My all time favorite is station Piute near the Nevada/California border. "Follow my buckboard track" indeed! :laughing:

DS1434 GRANITE

 

DESCRIBED BY US GEOLOGICAL SURVEY 1936 (WRP) LOCATED ON GRANITE PEAK, A BARE GRANITE KNOB WHICH SLOPES OFF TO A WOOD-COVERED RIDGE ON THE NORTH AND DROPS OFF ABRUPTLY TO THE SOUTH. TO REACH THE STATION FROM HILLSBORO POST OFFICE, GO WESTWARD 6.8 MILES ON U.S. HIGHWAY 180, TURN RIGHT (NORTH) AND GO 7.0 MILES TO THE B. REID RANCH, CONTINUE UP A CANYON 2.0 MILES TO THE MOFFAT MINE CAMP, CONTINUE 0.2 MILE TO THE END OF TRUCK TRAVEL. FROM HERE PACK UP CANYON FOR ABOUT 30 MINUTES FOLLOWING A TRAIL, CONTINUE UP THE CANYON ON A BLAZED TRAIL FOR ABOUT AN HOUR AND A HALF IN A NORTHERLY DIRECTION TO THE POINT WHERE THE TRAIL TURNS DUE EAST AROUND THE NORTH SIDE OF A HILL WITH A ROCKY KNOB ON TOP, TURN EAST WITH THE TRAIL FOR ABOUT 30 MINUTES TO THE TOP OF THE RIDGE. THE STATION IS IN SIGHT OFF TO THE RIGHT AT THIS POINT. BEAR RIGHT AROUND THE SOUTHERLY EDGE OF THE RIDGE TO A GRANITE KNOB ON THE SOUTHERNMOST POINT AND THE STATION. THE STATION AND REFERENCE MARKS ARE STANDARD U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY DISKS SET IN OUTCROPPING BEDROCK. REFERENCE MARK NO. 1 IS 4.775 METERS (15.67 FEET) FROM THE STATION S 53 DEG 47 MIN E. AND NO. 2 IS 8.579 METERS (28.15 FEET) FROM THE STATION N 33 DEG 47 MIN W. SIGNAL PEAK LOOKOUT MAY BE USED AS AN AZIMUTH MARK.

I do believe this is the "Most Forks" I have ever seen in an official recovery. Maybe you have to be from around here and been on some of these old tracks out here to get the best chuckles from this one.....

 

THE 1934 DESCRIPTION OF THE ROUTE TO STATION IS ADEQUATE, HOWEVER, THE STATION MAY BE REACHED WITH A 4-WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLE. THE COMPLETE DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS-- STATION IS ABOUT 17 MILES NORTH OF THE CEDAR RIDGE TRADING POST AND 1-1/4 MILES EAST-NORTHEAST OF THE BRIDGE OVER TANNERS WASH ON U.S. HIGHWAY 89. IT IS ON NAVAJO INDIAN RESERVATION LANON A HIGH RIMROCK WITH SCATTERED GROWTHS OF JUNIPERS ON THE SLOPES TO THE EAST AND NORTHEAST ALONG THE RIDGE FORMING THE RIM. THE STATION LOCATION IS VISIBLE FROM THE BRIDGE OVER TANNERS WASH. THE POINT IS ABOUT 8 FEET EAST OF THE FACE OF THE CLIFF. TO REACH FROM THE CEDAR RIDGE TRADING POST, ON U.S. HIGHWAY 89, GO EASTERLY ON THE OLD TRACK ROAD UP THROUGH THE GAP IN THE RIMROCK FOR 2.5 MILES TO FORKS AT THE SUMMIT OF THE SANDY, GRASS AND JUNIPER-COVERED MESA. (NOTE--THERE ARE NUMEROUS ROADS FORMING THE FOLLOWING JUNCTIONS). TAKE RIGHT FORK FOR 0.05 MILE THEN TAKE LEFT FORK, EAST-NORTHEAST, FOR 2.45 MILES TO FORKS. CONTINUE STRAIGHT AHEAD ON THE RIGHT FORK, KEEPING ON THE MAIN ROAD WHICH IS VERY SANDY AND WITH THE DEEPEST RUTS, FOR 10.2 MILES TO FORKS. KEEP RIGHT FORK FOR 2.1 MILES TO A DIM CROSSROAD WHERE SEVERAL TRACKS LEAD OFF TO THE LEFT, WESTWARD. CONTINUE NORTHERLY ON THE MAIN ROAD FOR 0.4 MILE TO A DIM ROAD ON THE LEFT. TURN LEFT AND FOLLOW DIM ROAD WEST-NORTHWEST FOR 0.5 MILE TO AN INDIAN ROCK HOGAN ON THE RIGHT AND CORRALS ON THE LEFT. KEEP ON LEFT SIDE OF HOGAN AND CONTINUE ON DIM ROAD NORTHWESTERLY, FOR 0.9 MILE TO A LONE CORRAL ON THE RIGHT. CONTINUE ON DIM ROAD WHICH SWINGS BACK TO THE LEFT, WEST-SOUTHWEST, UP DRAW ALONG THE LEFT SIDE OF A PROMINENT OUTCROPPING LEDGE-ROCK FORMATION, FOR 1.8 MILES TO A Y-FORK INTERSECTION. TAKE RIGHT FORK, WEST-NORTHWEST, FOR 1 MILE TO A REVERSE Y-FORK AND CROSSROAD. CONTINUE STRAIGHT AHEAD ON LEFT FORK FOR 0.05 MILE TO FORKS. KEEP LEFT FORK, MAIN ROAD, NORTHWEST, FOR 0.1 MILE TO A CROSSROAD AND FORKS. KEEP LEFT FORK FOR 1.35 MILES TO A DIM FORK. TAKE RIGHT FORK FOR 0.6 MILE TO OLD CORRALS ON THE LEFT. CONTINUE STRAIGHT AHEAD FOR 0.5 MILE TO A TRAIL INTERSECTION AND END OF ROAD. THIS POINT IS AT A LARGE SMOOTH ROCK FORMATION NEAR TWO SMALL PINE TREES, TRIMMED, ONE ON THE RIGHT AND ONE ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ROAD. KEEP STRAIGHT AHEAD ON JEEP TRACKS UP SANDY, SAGE-COVERED RIDGE, WESTERLY, FOR 0.9 MILE TO THE BASE OF THE DRIFTING SAND DUNES. BEAR TO THE RIGHT INTO EDGE OF JUNIPERS THENCE LEFT, WEST AND SOUTHWEST, UP ROCKY SLOPES, WINDING THROUGH THE JUNIPERS, FOR ABOUT 0.8 MILE TO THE HIGHEST POINT AND STATION. THIS IS A 2-1/2 HOUR JEEP DRIVE FROM CEDAR RIDGE. THE STATION MAY BE REACHED FROM CEDAR RIDGE TRADING POST BY GOING NORTH ON U.S. HIGHWAY 89 FOR 19 MILES TO A POINT 1.6 MILES BEYOND THE BRIDGE OVER TANNERS WASH. TURN RIGHT, EAST, ACROSS COUNTRY FOR 1 MILE TO THE BASE OF THE MOUNTAIN RANGE AND THE END OF TRUCK TRAVEL. FOLLOW THE TRAIL TO THE NORTH AND EAST TO THE TOP OF THE RIDGE, THENCE SOUTH AND WEST ALONG THE RIDGE FOR ABOUT 2 MILES TO THE HIGHEST POINT AND STATION.

I love this one, especially the last line. For KU3890 "PALISADES":

KU3890'ROCK. THERE ARE NO OBJECTS NEARBY WORTH MEASURING.
