geocaches on Indian Reservations

How do I go about getting permission to place a cache on an Indian Reservation?

 

I see a lot of caches on reservation lands. Is there different rules for different reservations?

 

Any help is apprecaited.

At a guess your going to have to talk with the local tribal government. If I remember correctly tribal reservations are soveriegn territory and are considred to be an independant nation.

Same as everywere else. If you own land there you can place a cache there. If you have permissoin you can place a cache there.

 

However tribes are all different. Our local tribes charge non members a tresspass fee to be outside the public right of way and outside of areas that you are invited (like the museum, casino, friends house, general store etc.). In theory if you have the permit you can be in variouse tribal lands that are not private or posted. However they are also very protective of their lands and interests and so I'd not place a cache without explicit permission in spite of the permit.

good advice. When I was traveling out west last summer I heard tales of would-be cache hiders in the four corners area having their stuff confiscated for being outside the public access areas.

Indian Reservation. Their stance on Geocaching is basically our lands are sovereign and if you put a cache on them we will confiscate your GPS, Car, and charge you with trespassing. They made it pretty clear that they do not and will not allow cache placements on their lands!!! The reservation is a sovereign nation AND private property. Permits are required to enter the reservation. Remenber that the land around this Monument is reveration.

 

So better ask before and make sure that everything is okay!

The most important thing is to establish a relationship with someone in the tribe,

if you have a personal relationship with a particular person things will be

much much easier than if you are just another outsider wanting something.

The last run in that I had with tribal police(not caching related) discouraged me from ever visiting any of the tribal lands again.

 

Tribes can be very touchy about their sovereign status. I would say always get permission and get it in writing. Then let the tribal police know that the tribal council has given you their permission.

 

Personally, I would just avoid the hassle and not place something on tribal lands.

I have several major reservations in my reviewing area, and they are as diverse as the tribes that live there.

 

One doesn't care. Another thought about it, and decided to not care. Another used to not allow it, but now they say it's OK, (but if you take more than 15 minutes, you need a $15 day use permit.)
