+Jimblonduk Posted January 21, 2007 Posted January 21, 2007 (edited) I may be intellectually challenged but I have heard of occasional groups being mentioned and was wondering if there was a list of Geocaching clubs or groups available to join? Would these groups be by town or county and therefore club together to produce 'Town or County Coins' or purchase bulk items, boxes, dogtags etc It would be nice to be affiliated with one of these as help and advice on all aspects of caching would be of fantastic value to newcomers with pertinent local information on land owners and rights of passage, as well as being able to design logo's and 'official' coins with maybe an affiliation crest included. Maybe then, school or scout groups would have a local contact for an introduction to the pasttime. E-mail newletters could be organised to keep everyone up to date with cache issues, news and information on a much more local level. If these clubs do exist, then a comprehensive list would be great as I know of none in the Midlands area. Maybe this should fall under and be governed by the GAGB. Your thoughts ??? +HazelS Posted January 21, 2007 Posted January 21, 2007 Not that I know of, although recently several lots of cachers have been grouping together to go caching, and this might be what you've heard of. Eg... I often meet up with the likes of Pengy and Tigger, Lollybob, Mongoose39uk, pop up pirate etc to cache. not anything formal, more a case of - "fancy caching this weekend!" Quote
+The Blorenges Posted January 21, 2007 Posted January 21, 2007 In this area Geocaching is a mostly solitary hobby, followed by the individual cachers and I am not aware of any "Caching Clubs". However, it becomes a group activity when one attends any of the many Events that are set up around the country. There, local cachers meet up for general socialising and news and views are exchanged on all aspects of Geocaching. From this, friendships may be formed between cachers who may then decide to go off and do a few caches, in an informal way, whenever they feel like it. There's nothing to stop you forming your own small local group by sending out a few emails to the owners of the local caches, suggesting a "get-together". If it goes well you may then like to consider hosting a proper Event Cache, open to allcomers. MrsB Quote
+lathama Posted January 21, 2007 Posted January 21, 2007 May i suggest if you are free popping down to the Brum bash (Feb 1st) which will allow you to meet other midlands cachers and possibly organise something Quote
+Hillhappy1 Posted January 21, 2007 Posted January 21, 2007 I'm up for a get together Gary if you're arranging one. Looking forward to Lathama's to meet a few faces and logs. Quote

As a newbie I asked to be adopted but there were no other cachers around locally who were able to help. I have recently set two series of caches in my local area which have been found my other "newbies" and some more establlished cachers also; one of the "newbies" (forcesofnature) and I had been talking about getting a local group together for caching expeditions and meets, events etc. AberCachers is now up and running, for anyone interested in geocaching in Wales. Forcesofnature is a web designer and has developed a lovely forum which is attracting new members from all over the country. There are forums for discussion on any topic to do with geocaching, as well as a general chit chat room, a shopping page and photo galleries; links to other agencies are being developed. We are hoping to organise an event later this year and also maybe designing a coin for the group as well. Visit www.aber-cachers.co.uk and say Hi. All geocachers are welcome - the more the merrier. Nearly all of the current members now have their own caches in the area. From a virtual desert Aberystwyth area now boasts over 20 caches within a 20 mile radius and these are growing daily. We had our first joint expedition last weekend and it was nice to cache as a group instead of going it alone as I usually do. There were seven adults and two children as we had decided to make it a family-friendly outing for our first trip. Are there any organised groups in other areas? I agree that it would be nic to have some kind of listing for them. Quote
+FollowMeChaps Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 At a pre-event meeting we held a couple of weeks ago The Great Redmondo came up with the idea that we see how much interest there would be in an informal local group (sort of Wessex/Somersetish/wider area I suppose???) meeting up regularly to chat, socialise, etc. on all things geocaching. He is going to float the idea at this Saturday's Burrington Bash. If others are interested please either put your names on the sheet he will be producing at the event or if you can't get there email me, followmechaps@hotmail.co.uk, and I'll pass the names on. I know it might seem to make more sense to contact Redmondo direct but I can't suggest that as I've not spoken to him about it. Thanks for letting me piggy-back on your thread Jimblonduk and I agree it would make sense if GeocachingUK copmpiled a list of local groups. Are you up for it guys? I was also someone who posted on the adopt a newbie site and got no bites. In fairness I rarely look at this thread myself now I could do some adopting. I know that someone suggested that there be localised threads so you could check out your own area but nothing became of this. I fear that the adoption nut is one we still have not cracked. +Alice Band Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 (edited) Certain UK regions seem to have larger amounts of cachers than others. Manchester and the surrounding area is a good place to be if you're a newbie or just wish to meet up with others. So are parts of South Hertfordshire, London and the West Country, so it would seem logical to have clubs based within regions with more cachers. However, I'm back here in the deserts of the East Midlands with few caches and fewer cachers (there's more per mile in Scotland than here!) I have been looking for a venue to organise a bash but they seem to be all fully booked for other events and weddings Oh well, one day.... I was also someone who posted on the adopt a newbie site and got no bites Same here with same results. I know others who also have had the same result. I suppose cachers must be a shy bunch And now I am in the position to adopt a newbie myself Edited February 21, 2007 by Alice Band Quote
+The Blorenges Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 Same here with same results. I know others who also have had the same result. I suppose cachers must be a shy bunch Shy? I think that the lack of contacts from "local to your area" cachers may be due to the fact that a relatively small proportion of UK geocachers visit this forum regularly. Personally, I think that if a newbie wants assistance they're better off contacting a few of their local cachers directly, through their profiles. MrsB Quote

+HazelS Posted February 21, 2007 Posted February 21, 2007 I always email new cachers in Wirral and invite them to come along with us on our "Invasion Days"... happy to hear from anyone that I've missed if they would like to come along... our motto has always been the more the merrier! Quote

+forcesofnature Posted February 22, 2007 Posted February 22, 2007 As a couple of people have mentioned already I've just set up a website for geocachers in Wales, although we are of course a friendly bunch so all are welcome. I'm in the process of adding a links directory to the site with a category 'geocaching groups, clubs and associations', so if you have one or are part of one feel free to add your URL to it. Al. Invasion days are quite simply where a group of us from the NW gather together and go and "invade" an area and cache for the day... We've been to lots of places - Chorley, Wirral, Oldham, Derby, Dudley...... like i said - anyone wants to join in if we're near you, feel free! Quote

+John Stead Posted February 22, 2007 Posted February 22, 2007 I'd be very happy to join a Wirral invasion of Wales, Hazel. Sorry that was not anti Welsh - I'm only after caches. Thank you too to the Aber group for welcoming me as a member even though I am only in their area for one week each year. Quote

I would also like to point out yet again, that I have never witnessed anything untowards happening at a camping event, save perhaps a few dodgy fashion items being worn! I know that many people organising camping events this year, including my own, will be very much family orientated. Just because I am not yet blessed with children does not mean I am a heathen!!
