+Sioneva Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 Okay. You're out caching by yourself. You approach the cache site, and you hear voices. You duck behind a tree, and peek out, and lo and behold you spot a ______________ of cachers, clustered around the ammo can. My question is, what do you call them? You can have a herd of cows, a murder of crows, a pod of whales, a parliament of owls, an exaltation of larks... but what do you call a group of cachers? A boast of cachers? A convergence of cachers? We need a term here! Quote

+NorthWes Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 While carleenp's 'cluster' phrase could oft apply to my life, I like 'convergence of cachers' From Wikepedia: "In the absence of a more specific context, convergence denotes the approach toward a definite value, as time goes on; or to a definite point, a common view or opinion, or toward a fixed or equilibrium state." Mushtang Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 I'd call it an event cache. I second this one. "Hey look, there's already an event of cachers looking for it, let's go introduce ourselves." Quote

We need a term here! I'd call it an event cache. But the group sure seems to be caching. By definition, geocaching events are not for the purpose of going to find caches. I'll stick with "Confluence" Edited January 19, 2007 by Moose Mob Quote
+BlueDeuce Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 An event of cachers. I mean what do you call it when you get them all together? Quote

+the hermit crabs Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 (edited) I was trying to picture this hypothetical group of cachers, and two different images came to mind simultaneously: some very businesslike no-nonsense cachers following the arrow and heading straight to the cache, and some rather confused ones walking around in circles following erratic signal-bounce. Since the first group is doing a "beeline", and the second group is doing the "drunken bee dance", then it seems that the collective term should be bee-related. So, I vote for "swarm". +FamilyDNA Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 gaggle was my first reaction to the question. Mine, too! A "CACHE" of cachers! I kind of like this one. Duhhh! An EVENTof cachers. Geocachers could be bees but they don't sting anybody. If you watch a group of geocachers closely, they typically walk in a line and carry swag from one cache to another. This seems very similar to the behavior of ants! A group of ants is an army. Hey geocachers even plan their attacks like an army and have to be stealthy! However, most groups of cachers are much smaller than an army; so how about a "platoon" of geocachers! Edited January 19, 2007 by TrailGators Quote
+VeryLost Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 A "crash" of cachers. As in "crash of rhinos". Meaning no disrespect towards rhinos, you understand Quote
Keystone Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 In this thread from 2005, I provided the Markwell to this thread from 2003. I am happy to continue being of service. To the best of my recollection, these are the only prior threads on this subject. Note who first suggested the term "event" of cachers. Quote

+icefall5 Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 How about a coterie? The def.: 1. a group of people who associate closely. 2. an exclusive group; clique. 3. a group of prairie dogs occupying a communal burrow. I think 1 and 2 describe us somewhat well. Quote
+Syndam Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 I can't believe it took 19 posts to get this one... A "CACHE" of cachers! Personally I prefer "A Black Hole of Cachers" Don't get to close... If you do, you'll get sucked into the group. Quote
+TheAlabamaRambler Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 Gaggle was my first thought. From wikipedia: In military slang the term gaggle is often used to describe; An unorganized group doing nothing... Quote

+Jhwk Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 (edited) Gaggle is my common term. But then you have to look at the size of the gaggle. Is it a buttload, or the lest sited ashload of cachers? sorry if the terminology above offended anyone, I altered when it slipped through... edit because I am insensitive, sometimes. +The Jester Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 A gaggle may be used (as in gaggle of geese - each trying to be heard), but my thought went towards a more cache oriented term: A Trade of Cachers. Quote
+two left feet Posted January 19, 2007 Posted January 19, 2007 A guggle of geocachers avoided the muggle. I liked guggle and gaggle. Then thought why not a Google of Cachers. It already carries the meaning "to search" which is what they are doing. Quote
